Re: Quiet (er) shop vac.

I have a couple of ~$1000 Dyson vacuums that I got this way, and the suction is killer. So I have one at my Lathe, one at my sander station, and one for my table saw/mitre saw. If you can afford a couple of $ 1000 dyson vacuums, you're in a price range where you can actually get some low noise indu...

Re: Rusticated billiard

Hey man, Good job so far, a couple things. 1. Your shape is more of a pot than a billiard. You want a slightly long/taller bowl on a billiard: 004-002-19786.7824.jpg 2. Your stem is too long or stummel too short. You want the stem/stummel junction to be the centerpoint. 3. For your rustication, &quo...

Re: My pipes

Hey there man,

Very pretty pipes. If you're looking for critique, it's hard for us to give you advice because they're such non-standard shapes. I'd recommend making some more traditional pipes if you're looking for critique.

Re: First few pipes - comments and critique would be great

Hey there, Welcome to pipemaking! First of all, I'll just say that those aren't bad for a first couple of pipes, especially the later ones. I'll let the other guys give you more specific feedback, but here are some general tips to guide you in the right direction. What I (and most other makers on th...

Re: A question of speed

I find that once you turn the shank, you can actually turn the bowl at max speed because there's almost zero wobble. That being said, I've mounted my lathe to my bench, so use caution your first time at higher speeds.

Re: Quiet (er) shop vac.

My "dust collection system" is actually to have a standard house vacuum at each of my work stations. I don't know where you live, but in California people regularly throw out their vacuums when they move, so I'll just grab it and deep clean it out before bringing it in (you don't want bugs...

Re: Do you square up your blocks?

Yes. I actually use a mitre saw with a block clamp that holds the briar in place so I don't kill myself. I've found it's essential for some blocks. I probably had $200 of blocks that I couldn't use without squaring, so coming up with a way to square them is really helpful. You can: Mitre Saw with cl...

Re: Makis Vs Mimmo Ebauchon Heel Squareness

Man, it looks like I'm just complaining about nothing then :P

I'm actually using the VF jaws, I'll put a bit more elbow grease into tightening it down on the block.

Thanks guys, you're the best :)

Re: Import Band Saws

I should elaborate, I've had some issues on the HF Bandsaw table staying true, but nothing an occasional adjustment won't fix. I'm sure that it's an issue with a lot of the cheaper bandsaws, but definitely an option to consider. I'm looking at upgrading for smoother sawing of lumber for tables etc. ...

Re: Import Band Saws

For what it's worth, I have the Harbor Freight Bandsaw and it's not terrible. That being said, it could be a lot better. It's fine for what I use it for though.

Hahaha just noticed that. Don't worry, it's drilled fine, the photo just sucks. That's my bad, I need to take better photos next time.

Billiard for your Critique

Hey everyone, After the last round critiques I decided to keep my head down and churn through some Billiards to improve. I think that so far this is my best one so please destroy it. (I know that Olivewood isn't standard, but I think that this is my best shape-wise, so please excuse the alternate ma...

Differences in Shaping Style by Country?

Hey guys, I hear a lot of smokers say things like "that's a very Italian shape" or "that's a traditional English shape". Is there something that makes a pipe lean towards being Italian vs. English etc.? I've searched the various Pipe smokers forums and of course every answer is c...
