Are you buffing real hard? From what I have heard from the jewelry side of working with amber, excess heat when buffing may cause it to crack.

Ok, and along those thoughts, I have not seen a taper bit longer than 7.5 inches or so. If I was making a churchwarden with a 10 inch stem, would I be able to get away with heatind/ softening up the bit end and squeezing it down before shaping the stem, (like crushing down the ende of a straw), then...

Ok, so if I am making a churchwarden stem, and starting with, say, 24 mm rod ebonite, would I be able to drill out the draft hole with the full rod diameter, then support the tail end with a live center?

Ebonite/vulcanite turning question
When working with vulcanite on a lathe, does it tend to flop around on the tail end if unsupported, i.e. when drilling the draft hole, or is it pretty rigid like wood and/or acrylic?
