Re: What to look for in a used Foredom
Impatience wins. And, for those wondering, the SR has enough torque to break the flex shaft if you catch your glove with a hogging burr and throw your pipe across the backyard. Foredom: 1 BarrelProof: 0 Back to the waiting game. Went ahead and ordered 4 shafts. You're ok I assume :?: If so ...

Re: PITH 2020!
How do you guys feel about a sure enough beginner joining this? I’m willing to make several between now and then, submit for feedback, take advice, etc. I was thinking about buying 6 kits from Mark Tinsky and getting after it, but wanted to check here first. I’d love to do this, but the first one I...

Re: Practice Pot.
It's loosely based on a pot I saw elsewhere. I'm really happy with the stummel (I've continued it) but I almost remade the stem entirely. I decided to rework the entire button area, cutting it back a bit to do so. I'm still not happy with the stem, but rather than make a new one I kept it. This is a...

Re: Practice Pot.
The draft hole in the button looks a little large. I use 1/16”. And cutting the sides of the button is not correct. DocAitch I didnt have a 1/16 and thought I could get away with 3/32. That combined with how badly I botched the shape says Im making a new practice stem for this pot. I'll post pics w...

Practice Pot.
A little nosewarmer pot I am working on for practice with my tools. I am cutting my very first stem and I am already not happy. Critique as harshly as you will, but -please add advice to finish this little shop pipe. https://i.imgur.com/fEvrfF6l.jpg https://i.imgur.com/D1TIS7Xl.jpg https://i.imgur.c...

Re: PITH 2020!
My very uneducated guess is after. But this assumes you can get it back in the lathe well enough centered.

Re: My pipes for sale.
There are a number of pipe makers that sell pipes on the Pipe Smokers Den website. You can go there and see what pipes are selling for. It seems to me that most of the guys selling there are under $500 with some in the $150 range. https://pipesmokersdens.com/ Thats where I intend to sell. But I mus...

Welcome to the fun! from one sailor to another Thank you for serving (STG3 1987-1992) This is the place to ask all things pipe making. They seem a bit standoffish at first, but they warm up a little. Besides, there is more good info on the art than anywhere else. Oh and there's the scathing reviews ...

Good information thank you. How do I convert this to the VF grading? He uses grade 1 through 3. (Well actually I only ever see grades 2 ans 3)

Re: Proud owner of a Craftsman 12 inch wood turning lathe. What now?
All that said; this is a hobby for me. Im not looking to make a living, only to some day pay the expenses to continue. The tooling that is cross compatible doesnt even go into my cost analysis. In other words, materials are in, tooling that is specific to the hobby such as those jaws is in, but the ...

Right there with you on the level of the bar here. BUT we must remember anything we post here is being scrutinized by folks who have been in this game for quite a while. Additionally, we are looking for feedback so they will (should) be ultra critical on everything in order to be sure we know about ...

Re: PITH 2020!
I am way behind, but I still want to participate. I have decided to wait once again, as my loving wife is allowing me to order the chuck jaws from VF on the 15th. This means that I wont even be starting any pipes till around the 20th or later of April. With the deadline of July 31st I am behind alre...

A question of speed
My lathe has the following speeds available: 875 1350 2250 3450 I have only used it at 875, and I find that speed makes a shaping disc turn at a speed that is fast enough to do the job without taking more off than I intended. What speed should I use for actually turning a pipe block? I've had a scra...

Re: Proud owner of a Craftsman 12 inch wood turning lathe. What now?
Update: I have a face shield on order... From china... It will get here eventually. I have also been informed that the coveted chuck jaws I think would be really nice to have (and in fact I need more than I suspected) I am allowed to order on the 15th. My wife must REALLY love me cause I've spent up...
