At least some mild critique: No. 1 is a well done classic. I like it, because it does not only look like the attempt to look like it. No. 2 is well done, though floral elements may not be on everybody's wishlist. I personally would have treated the shank/bowl junction with a much smaller radius. It ...

There were days I used to enjoy the feeling of stepping into something new. I feel sort of neutral this time. I don't want to think of any moving after that one ahead. Might be the last time I don't dislike it. And it's only a typical German move. No 800 miles across three state borders. In fact it'...

Josh,

nothing satisfactory so far. Though I did not really try hard. I am moving in three weeks, so my head is full of everything but my pipe work…

Scott, the pic from your post is most certainly a composing from the pipe (taken in a white setting), the background (an enlarged part of the pipe with gradient masking and slightly subdued in the tonal range) and probably a technical black (masked and set to black in Photoshop or similar software)....

White and black backgrounds are interesting for pipe display as they never distract the viewer's eye from the object – the pipe. Both backgrounds tend to fool the camera's (esp. the cheaper all auto ones) exposure meter. On a white background, the subject tends to be too dark, on a black one, the re...

Uhm, sorry. This morning, it works as it should. Maybe a hiccup after the browser update, dunno.

Top level links (Forum, wiki, etc) in FF 2.0

Kurt, just upgraded to FF 2.0 Mac. It seems, that this version either does not handle the target "content" from a link correctly. All those links open in a new window (or tab). Or maybe it comes from the missing closing </iframe> tag in the main page, so that FF might interpret the target,...

I would be willing to try, though it would make it a transatlantic project with two rather expensive sendings. Hmm. And – I will be moving in the end of January, I already packed my tools and will not be able to participate until maybe end of February. Only steps (following Tyler's principle) I migh...

Yep, darn cute! I don't care for ethnicities too much, either. It just that I would not want to credit someone by fault. I like it very much. And tough I am not that much into Christmas: I wish a happy one to all of you and your families. It' been a pleasure and a privilige to communicate, discuss, ...

There's one thing I really adore about you American guys: It's the lightness of the humor that you can make out of things like Xmas. Here in Germany christmas is not necessarily deeply serious and religious, but if we joke about it, it is mostly from some cynical anti attitude. We would not even con...

At least I am not suffering from lacking a Mac, allthough Santa might consider sending me one of those quadruple core workstations in 10 days. Guess nobody told him lately…

:?

But there should be comparable freeware that does similar conversions on a Windoze.

Non metric scales bug me everytime I work on the old sailboats from the sailing school I work for (on a hobby basis). All those inch-based screws are a pain to deal with in Germany and the Netherlands. But me being a typographer, I remember an inch being 2,54 cm (please note that the "," i...

Only thing that disturbs me is the discrepancy between the shaping of the bowl, which looks quite individual and elaborate on one hand and the rather uninspired shank and stem on the other. Not that I am doing it any other way, but it looks like it was started from a standard kit where the wood was ...

I am still not that sure about the sea horse. To my eyes a sea horse prime visual impression is that of fine lines, very filigree style. So at least the shank is (It would be the sea horse's tail, or do I see it upside down or something?) too thick to resemble a sea horse. It has something sea horsi...

Michael, I have read somewhere that one should always keep one finger in the tobacco chamber when buffing. I think one of the things that makes this work is the fact that you have to actually think about how you're holding the pipe, instead of concentrating only on the finish. In fact, the visible ...

Business card arises at least two questions – design and printing. Finding a local printshop should be rather easy. May be more expensive than online ressources, but if you want something individual, even the print process becomes important. A local print shop will be able to supply every sort of pa...
