The boxwood I have I got from Woodcraft.com. They don't have any listed on their site when I checked last week. There's a guy who posted in the "Raw Material" forum about having some but I haven't been able to contact him. Email address is boxwoodreseller@yahoo.com and his URL is http://ww...

Everyone thank you so much--I honestly would not be making pipes if not for this forum. I know I have said that several time and others have said it too. But it is the absolute truth and I'm very thankful to all of you. The stem length is a bit short but I tell you, I wasted alot of rod stock gettin...

Hello Heinz and welcome to the forums. The people here are the reason I'm making pipes--everyone has gone out of their way to help. Everything I know about pipe making I learned here. Don't worry about your English--mine isn't that good either and it's my first language. We won't even talk about my ...

@ Hazmat--the trim ring is French Boxwood and it is excellent stuff to work with and yep, the finish is sandblast. @ Bryan--thanks Bud! You know me, I do love the boxwood--the stuff is awesome. @ Rad--Thank you sir for your kind words. Now if I can just do them faster . (You really layout, cut and d...

First I apologize as I know this is an Ivarsson shape--I know it has been done by several people. I just really love the shape and I've been wanting to do one for quite awhile. This one came out so nice I had to share with you guys because I know you can appreciate when something just comes together...

You also have to give them away *to the right people*--look, everyone wants a free pipe so you have to be selective. I've given several away--a couple of them I wish I could have back--but one in particular has been invaluable compared to what I would have made monentarily from it.

I read Durk's post as also questioning Fiebing's dye in general, so I wanted to vouch for their other products. Hey Scott, Right about Fiebing's other colors--I use them all the time and I didn't mean to sound like I was talking about all of them. It's just the white that I was talking about. Best,...

Finally, you mentioned difficulty with your trim rings. That is a problem that is solved by order of assembly. When I'm using bamboo (without a vulcanite separator ring) or a trim ring I always completely finish the pipe including waxing and buffing before gluing the trim ring into place (I'm assum...

Thanks Rad,
I'll try thinning it out some and see if that helps. What do you use to apply it? I've been using Q-tips but from what you wrote I'm guessing that's part of the problem since it takes so long to cover the pipe.

Applying Shellac--what am I doing wrong

Can someone go over applying shellac again--I'm having limited success. Problem 1--When I apply the shellac (Hock dewaxed flakes mixed with grain alcohol) it mingles with my stain (fiebings dye) and mottles the colors all up and/or it get's dye all over my trim rings. Problem 2--I read where somebod...

Yes, and I wouldn't put it on Sauron's pipe. It's the most foul smelling dye/stain/whatever that I've used. It's also meant for a very porous material like leather, and it contains oils that won't penetrate brair. It's similar to the white magic markers that never seem so cover enough. I bought it ...

Guess I'm doing things different. I always make sure I have a radius in the corner between the tenon and the stem shoulder. A radius gives the tenon strength and will resist breaking better than one without it.

I use a 1/2" ball nosed rotary file to countersink my mortises.

One question: how are you attaching/securing the shank trim? I've been wanting to do something like this, and I have some guesses on how it is done, but how are you keeping it secured to the pipe. Thanks. I cut a recess on both sides of the band just like the one you see on the end of the shank whe...

Scott,
I love the shop--very nice lathe--what make is it? Did you get the lathe from craigslist? (Notice I dare not post the link to craigslist--that is an ENTIRELY different thread!) :D

Also, where did you get your chamber bit (that is your chamber bit in the chuck yes?)?

25 Grams! Wow! The mouthpiece looks very nice--very nicely detailed. The only thing I would criticize is the diameter of the trim ring--to my eye, it doesn't match the rest of the pipe. (I know, I know--quite a comment from a guy who attached a wedding band to one of this pipes)... :D
