After several hours of struggle, I made a lathe chuck arbour that works beautifully holding the pipe by the mortise hole steadily, while cutting the face of the joint. If that is of interest to anyone, I will go into further detail. Brad Brad, I would love to hear further details on the arbor you c...

One more comment--the knuckles on that piece of bamboo look almost perfect--it's a gorgeous piece.

Big thanks to Tyler for encouraging everyone to work with the stuff--I was never a bamboo fan but now I'm firmly in the "I love it" crowd.

Brad that's beautiful! Did you start out intending to rusticate it--if not, the briar did you a favor because the rustication looks FANTASTIC. Did you use the nail tool or some other technique?

I was sure it was that article where I read about weight. I'm going to have to go back and figure out where I read it. (Read below--it's a quote from Jody Davis' website) Anyway, I don't want to give the impression they felt my pipes were boat anchors. They seemed genuinely impressed however, I aske...

Weight

Do you consider weight when deciding what shape to use on a particular piece of briar? I'm asking because I went to Uptown's Thursday--I wanted some feedback on my work--one of the things we talked about was weight. To be honest I had never considered weight before. Then I remembered reading the art...

Kurt, Do you cut a tenon on the bamboo itself? Nope. I use Delrin. I use .25" OD Delrin and drill a 5/32" airway in it before epoxying it into the bamboo. Works really well for me. I've made exactly one bamboo pipe with a steel tenon - nothing wrong with it, I just prefer to work with del...

Kurt, Do you cut a tenon on the bamboo itself? Bill the only pipe I've made with bamboo is still on the bench. However, I've installed the bamboo--the way I got it square was I drilled an 11/64" hole through the bamboo then glued it onto a piece of stainless tubing with 11/64" OD and 5/32&...

Does your briar talk to you?

Occaionally I'll have a block say something... it's usually something like "At least Trever would have gotten the proportions right." Or the other day when I was tossing a stummel onto the "dead" pile it said "Jack Howell would have at least taken me fishing". Once, whe...

Thanks for the reply, Dave. Yes, I am referring to the cross slide. I tried to explain what was happening in an email to the dealer but apparently I could not get my point across. Re: Taig Problem

Ever since I got my Taig, I have had trouble trying to dial in the diameter of my tenons. It seems that there is a certain part of the range of the dial where it seems to turn too freely (i.e. will "wander" away from the number that I dial in). Has anyone else had this problem, and if so ...
