Re: Broken stem
I don't mind the cold so much, at least not when it's consistent. The problem here is yesterday we had a high of -20, tomorrow we have a high of 5, and right now they're claiming as high as 10 for the weekend, but I know better than to trust any forecast more than 48 hours out.

Broken stem
I am sure other people have discovered this, however, to my chagrin, I recently discovered that vulcaite stems become rather brittle at -25c.

Kurt, thank you for the information, based on that, I'll probably continue using linseed for my personal pipes, but if I decide to start making pipes for other people I'll probably swith to carnuba.

Re: First foray into pipemaking.
Amnell, the main reason that I left it so clunky is because I just flat out got tired of carving. I have blisters all down the side of my finger from the back of my knife, and callouses in places that shouldn't be possible. I've considered reshaping it once I get some better tools, but I think I am ...

Re: Linden wood
https://www.bellforestproducts.com Bell forest is an excellent source of unique and exotic woods. They don't do briar, but if you are interested in other woods for pipes, ferrules, etc, they are a great source. They have the hardness, density, and health hazards of their woods listed, which can be u...

Opinions on Linseed Oil.
Hi, I'm a veteran smoker, but very new to pipe making, and I have learned that a lot of finishes tend to blister after being smoked for a while. I have done other projects with wood, and I have always used linseed oil, which I finished my first pipe with, but I was wondering if other people have tri...

First foray into pipemaking.
20210113_094148.jpg 20210113_094619.jpg Be polite, please, I know its ugly. I have been a pipe smoker for 10+ years and I have always wanted to make my own pipe. I have had the block of wood knocking around for a few months, but was dragging my heels on actually turning it into a pipe. Then one day...
