Accent rings - glued on temporarily?
Hi, is there an easy way to glue an accent ring on the shoulder I turned onto the end of the shank, but only temporarily? That way I can finish the ring, take it off, finish (sandblast, dye etc.) the stumble and glue the ring on permanently. Something like locktite that can be dissolved with heat or...

Thanks Massis! I've found a tool rest specifically for my multifix holder. I'll start with that one and see how it works!

Switching lathes…
Have been thinking about adding real "wood turning capabilities" to my process... Any of you out there using both a metal lathe (for drilling) and a wood lathe (for shaping) or using a tool rest for turning tools on the metal lathe? Would love to hear about your set-up or workflow. I know ...

Re: Buffing Speed
Thanks (also for the link)! I also found your VFD set-up on some thread.
I am already using a VFD sanding disc on a 1.5 HP motor. But I am planning a dedicated buffing station where I can have 4 wheels set up permanently.

Re: Buffing Speed
Yes, when buffing stems I thought the 2800 RPM were actually nice. But for initial steps I have founds myself "needing" a very slow speed.
So in other words, VFD is the way to go, if you're using just one motor?

Buffing Speed
Hello Gents, I've been reading up on buffing and am getting ready to re-build my buffing set-up. In order to avoid having to buy a VFD for my buffing motor, I want to use a pulley-and-belt system. I will have all wheels lined up on one single axis. So all running at same speed. My question is: Using...

Re: Working with ivory/mammoth
Well, that works for geometrical (square and round) shapes. Do you saw the crooked ivory pieces into perfect squares first???

Working with ivory/mammoth
Hey there,
any tips on how to work with naturally uneven pieces such as mammoth (as applications, ferrules etc.)
How do you get them chucked up to square off the surface in order to glue them to the stem or stummel?
Do you epoxy them to something round or square?
Any hints appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Basics of staining
Lighting your pipe on fire really only serves convenience - the stain dries faster so you can begin sanding again. It doesn't "drive the stain into the wood" - science (and practical application) don't support that. The basics: - sand to 500 or 600 grit - stain - buff - apply wax As I sai...

Re: Residual moisture in briar (morta etc.)
Weigh the block and mark the weight and date on the block with a pencil. re weigh it periodically (4-6 weeks). Mark and date. When the block remains approximately the same weight for a couple of weighings, it has reached the ambient moisture level for your location. DocAitch Thanks! I read that in ...

Residual moisture in briar (morta etc.)
Hi there, how do you all "check" the humidity of the briar blocks (and other materials)? Just by knowing how long it dried after being cut by the cutter? Or do you use some kind of hygrometer to check? Along those lines, what is a good range of residual moisture (%) in briar before you rea...
