Re: Classic English Billiard...
In all seriousness, and an attempt to work on my "eye" for shapes... What bothers me is that the fairly traditional, and organic, shapes of the bowl and stem are interrupted with a straight-ass piece of tube. Were the tubing shaped in a more blended way, and without the accent ring etceter...

Re: A question about bent drilling.
I realize I'm pretty new, and only have so much to offer, but here's my $.02. First thing I do with a block is sand at least the sides parallel. This gives me a much easier time of squaring it in the chuck. It also gives me a good look at the grain, and a nice surface for sketching on.

Re: Briar Chuck Jaws FS
First was to knock off the sharp edges so if I got a knuckle in the way that they would do less damage. Wut??? That's pretty lame. Everyone knows that women love scars, plus pipe carvers know that REAL proof of dedication and committment isn't achieved until you've had at least TWO bone-exposing go...

Briar snuff jar
Decided to see if I could use a standard tap and die on an acrylic rod offcut... idle hands ya know. Then I just had to use it on something, so I made a snuff jar. The body was made from a briar reject block with a crack on the stem. The threaded pieces wouldn't fully thread together, need a bottomi...

Re: What pipe cleaners do you use for staining/ How do YOU apply stain?
Somewhere along the line I bought a bulk bag of leather dye daubers. Makes sense that they work great for applying dye, but the handles all get hooked together. When calculating in the PITA factor, I'm not so sure they're worth it lol.

Re: Briar for 1st Pipe
A little tag on to Doc's comments. I've made many of my own pipes from Premal's "reject" blocks. More often than not, they are sound other than cosmetic defects. Sometimes, by the time I get down to a stummel, they have no defects. They have been great for learning on a budget.

Re: Little short of a Lovat
Definitely better although proportion-wise it's a bit short and fat like an apple or a pot but still within the realm of a billiard. Another suggestion on the saddle: a more acute cut looks cleaner and more professional. Gradual ramping comes off as lacking the properly rounded tool to make the cut...

Re: Little short of a Lovat
When you have the top of a bowl wider than the bottom, that's a dublin. They way that you stretched out the front rim of the bowl made the top line go not perpendicular to the axis of the chamber, it looks like it has been flattened towards the stem. Thanks. I've been pouring over diagrams and desc...

Re: Little short of a Lovat
Yeah, I see the profile of the bowl is off. Not arguing, just trying to learn. I should have had the apex of the curve much lower. I also see that my picture does exaggerate the problem too. The pipe is leaning towards the bowl. Holding it level with George's sketch framing the bowl, the back of the...

Little short of a Lovat
If I'd had just a little more shank to work with. Again, I didn't make the stem, though I did massage it some. Let me know what you think. https://i.imgur.com/vf0Oo3E.jpg https://i.imgur.com/KJHbvVy.jpg https://i.imgur.com/rvsTWwm.jpg https://i.imgur.com/q9YFzo6.jpg https://i.imgur.com/b5UgSND.jpg h...

Re: My best effort so far
I think a thinner shank would make the overall composition better. As it is, the shank makes the bowl look smaller than it is. A little less rounding of the rim would give it more definition. It looks like it can't decide if it wants to be a Dublin or a pear shape. But it's definitely not a billiar...

Re: Big catch. Ruined Stummel.
I come from the bowl turning world (if your only tool is a hammer...) and do most of my stummel turning with a bowl gouge. Sharp tool, light careful cuts, and I've haven't had a catch yet. I've also used carbides for squaring off ends, and some rim shaping. I use a wood lathe, not surprisingly, and ...
