Re: How many "file-made pipes" before upgrading to lathe?

Thanks for the information. Maybe I will contact him because it is easier to make them with non-electric tools, in my current case. I am not against them, as a matter of fact I want them, but I don’t have the space and the romanticism of the low tech pipe crafter is still present for me.

Re: How many "file-made pipes" before upgrading to lathe?

I know everybody has to start somewhere. I gave up on this until now, disappointed because I just don’t have the space in the suburbs. I am also very particular and know I’ll never be able to get a metal lathe for making stems. The only place people that live in these mass produced hells often have ...

Re: How many "file-made pipes" before upgrading to lathe?

A 1” belt sander is useful for stem shaping, less so for general stummel shaping. I think variable speed would be good to match your material and grit, because you could cut more efficiently and the belts would last longer. That said, my 1x30 HF works fine in a very limited role, and I would spend ...

About to buy a Rikon 1x30 belt sander...

Is the extra $120 worth variable speed?

Re: How many "file-made pipes" before upgrading to lathe?

A drill press is like a verticle version of a horizontal lathe. I am in no way great pipemaker strictly a part timer. But I use an old drill press and disc sander and files and sandpaper to get good results. This is the path I am now taking. I don’t predict I’ll need the drill press for a while but...

Re: How many "file-made pipes" before upgrading to lathe?

Thanks, I’m not really a mechanical type of guy and don’t have anyone to help with it so belt sander/drill press it is. I found an old Craftsman drill press that works. If I could restore its aesthetics I’d be ecstatic if I find out it was made in the US.

Re: How many "file-made pipes" before upgrading to lathe?

I have enough tools for normal woodworking, the less I have to invest the better, lathes plus all the gear was indeed thousands when I checked. Thanks for the recommendations for removing material, it’s what I wish I could’ve done 90% of the time I spent 6+ hours filing on Sunday, I will promptly be...

How many "file-made pipes" before upgrading to lathe?

I am currently working on my first pipe and it's a doozy with only some files and rasps. I have a Japanese dovetail saw but briar is pretty tough. I really don't want to overshoot some cuts and screw myself. One thing it has taught me is that mistakes that take 1 millisecond to occur take and extrem...

Re: What tools do I need to buy to make pipes?

I wish it were possible to make desirable pipes with only non-electric gear. It is totally possible. In fact, some might argue that that is the best skill builder..... and it's slow.... and inefficient. But possible. Perhaps it's hard because I don't have simple carving tools yet as it wasn't my fo...

Re: What tools do I need to buy to make pipes?

Can anyone help me out with understanding the differences between lathes? I have done all my woodworking solely by hand, Japanese saws, hand planes, chisels, hammers, bit brace, you name it. I am buying a number of axes for felling trees and carpentry, plus a froe for wood shingles. I have absolutel...

Re: Precision Matthews 1127 Metal lathe w/DRO

I cannot for the life of me start a post or send a PM due to some weird bug where the text box is missing/just a microscopic sliver which I can’t click or type in… however this quick reply works!

Any interest in shipping to Florida? Lastly, what is its age?

Cheers.
