Re: Art or Craft?

How can one know if an artist put his soul into it or not? Maybe it's all soul and the art sucks because the artist lacks technical proficiency. Maybe it's all in the viewer's head? If you think art is bad because you think the artist didn't put enough soul into it, isn't that your problem? I don't ...

So if what you're saying is correct, your "ball-busting" on this thread is just a form of art? :D
Scottie is the Michelangelo da Vinci of pipe making forum ball-busting.

Re: Art or Craft?

That's not to say one can't logically defend a spiritual belief. One of my best friends is a PhD student in a dual Philosophy / Religious Studies program. He loves nothing more than engaging in Christian apologetics and applying philosophical and logical systems to try and prove the existence of God...

Re: Art or Craft?

I agree with Scottie in that I don't believe an original has more art or meaning than a print of that art. That depends entirely on the viewer. Speaking of which, that's a big part of (post)modern art philosophy...it doesn't matter what the artist intended, only how it's perceived by the viewer. Ori...

Re: Art or Craft?

Wojtek, I think you are mostly correct that it doesn't really matter, but I think it's a valuable discussion if for no other reason than it provides for a bit of mental calisthenics. I don't think anybody thinks there isn't an artistic element to pipe making, even those who firmly believe it is craf...

Re: Art or Craft?

To say that a copy of a piece of art is not actually art and that only original ideas or works can be art is very closely approaching contradiction of some of your previous points, Micah and David. If the original is art, a copy of that must also be art. The method of creation doesn't matter when di...

Re: Art or Craft?

It's an exercise in futility only if the goal is consensus. There is a lot of value in the discussion. Sometimes real gems like "briarrhea" shake loose.

Re: Art or Craft?

Don't you have some dodecahedron to hand sand? I think you missed a typo. What you meant to saw was: Don't you have some art to hand sand? No, if I were to restate it would be "Don't you have some artfully executed crafts to hand sand?" : ) I think George expanded on some of the iss...

...and many famous athletes are called heroes by their fans, because they scored the winning points that one time. Does that mean it's true?

Basically, subjectivity makes this an unanswerable question. At least not in any tidy, satisfying way.

Re: Art or Craft?

I agree, and it's certainly complex. I think Todd's "fiercely intertwined" is exactly right. It illustrates the complex nature of two concepts forming a larger whole...if one were able to untangle those, we would have an easier discussion on our hands. At the end of the day the reason we h...

Re: Art or Craft?

This discussion hinges on whether you think words have specific meanings. One can give alternate meanings to every word possible until we're all worm food. At that point, though, what's even the point of having language if we can all change the meaning to suit our own purposes. In order to continue ...

Re: Symmetry vs. Asymmetry

David, I brought up the Ivarsson blowfish and I agree with what you said about it. I brought it up as a counterpoint to the idea brought up in the other thread that a pipe needs to be symmetrical or not and that you can't go halfway. You said the Ivarsson is inherently a symmetric shape, but I'm sug...

Re: Symmetry vs. Asymmetry

I'm not sure I agree with the idea that you can't go halfway, because there are a whole lot of really nice pipes out there that have tear drop shanks (always asymmetrical) paired with pretty darn symmetrical egg or tomato, etc bowls. The Lars style blowfish being a good example. While not perfectly ...

Then and Now

Jesse, I'm sure our resident comedians would agree that the fact that you can make pipes that look like Joneses and Chhedas is a testament to your skill and growth.
