Why do we use delrin?

Ok, as far as I can tell the one good thing about delrin is that is cheap, I accept there may be other good points about delrin, self lubricating for instance, but I hate using it. Yes I scrape it and roughen it but still have problems glueing it, I'm thinking about taps and dies to actually thread ...

Re: This months offering

Thanks for the comments, it's nice to know I'm doing something right. The stem has more of a bend than it appears to in the picture, that being said it is still pretty minimal. I bend the stem more on standards or old fashioned pipes, I like pipes from the early 1900's, or before, when they had a mo...

Re: Bamboo shank

It depends on which draft hole you mean. I use SS tube to reinforce repairs and long thin shanks and I plug the ends with wax, simply warm and it comes out. When it comes to permanent extentions I fit the tube in the stummel first, add glue, then add the bamboo, tape the whole thing together and lea...

This months offering

From this months crop I have chosen this one to share with you. A bit different from my usual fair it has influences from all over the place. The rustification is done with a 1mm dentists bit in 3 layers, the pipe was shellac'ed with a thicker than my normal mix which filled the rustification and wa...

Re: Bamboo pipe with a lid, yep.

I find these pipes interesting as much because of the reaction to them as to the work that has gone into them. There is obviously some question about thier intended use but small chambered pipes are not that rare in europe, I have a load of Geman pipes which bracket WW2 and have chambers 1/2"X1...

Re: pre-carbonized bowl questions....hopefully not out of line

I've not used the mixture you've described but it is normal to make up a paste and paint it on with a brush, fingertip, qtip, pipecleaner etc. I find it helps to dampen the chamber just prior to painting. I'd be interested to know how you get on with the mix once it's dried as it sounds like it may be...

Re: mystery pipes

Daniel, Your Primus pipe could be a Comoy second probably from the 30's or 40's, or Primus Pipes which were made by Louis Glass & Co, also in England, dates unknown. I have a copy of Who Made That Pipe by Herb Wilczak and Tom Colwell which list many of the lesser know brands and makers of the ea...

Re: Pre-treating bowls

I use the creme fraiche (3 teaspoons), buttermilk (3 teaspoons) and carbon (50 capsules) mix on all my pipes but allways offer to remove it prior to shipping, most people ask me to leave it on. At some stage I will reverse this and see what happens. My personal choice is for an untreated bowl, it ju...

Re: Affect of Finish

There has been a lot of debate over the years on how the finish of the pipe affects its smoking properties and some of the pipe smoking guru's get quite heated about it. Most of these guru's insist that any finish which seals the briar will degrade a pipes smoking properties by preventing it from br...

Re: Testing and Mixing Stains

When buying Fiebings dye you need to be careful which one you get, they do an 'Institutional Dye' which is water based and is pretty useless at dying leather never mind briar. And as said above staining and then sanding is a good way of spotting scratches and making sure that you sand all of the stu...

Re: Shellac-on-rustic question

I've bought quite a bit of stuff from the same seller and have found them to be pretty fast, I placed an order for dye on Saturady afternoon and it arrived today (Wednesday). When you are talking about lb cuts I take it this is the weight of flakes-solvent, I spent ages googling shellac and came up ...

Re: Another newbie

It's strange how you don't see things unitl they are pointed out to you. The coffee pot is my second attempt at a sitter, with the first one I went through the bottom of the chamber so I admit to be overly timid with flattening the bottom of this one. The front view of the pipe shows the shape a bit...

Another newbie

Hello one and all, I have finaly summoned up the courage to post some pics of my pipes for your comments. I bought my first kit in May last year and my first ebaucheons in July. The second pipe (a coffe pot) is number 30. I try and stick to classic forms but tend to get led astray more often than no...
