Re: Blasting. Pot or Siphon?

So having played around a bit I'm still not sure which method I prefer. Media 3:1 xfine glass & chil iron. Working with the pot was improved greatly by increasing the bore of the feeder etc on the bottom, during the process I also discovered a 1" round bit of solder splat in the pot which k...

Re: the shape of a billiard pipe

A method I use to keep the bowl round is to glue a large metal washer to the rim, if you can find the centre on the bottom you can add a second which gives you a guide to create a cylinder, vary the size of top and bottom washer to change to taper on the cylinder. You can then choose whether to go w...

Blasting. Pot or Siphon?

Hail and well met from Northern Ireland, It's been a while since this came up so I thought I'd bring it up again before buying the kit. I have a 200lt (50ish gallon) 15cfm/115psi compressor and from here and youtube I'm leaning towards a pot with fine beads (although I intend to try different media)...

I'll have to join the facebook group and do the pics through that or you can pm me an email address here, bear in mind it's 00.23am here, I'm making tampers for the next couple of hours so I'll have time to do something.

Re: Would Someone Please Tell Me The Proper Placement For the Nub On A Cutty Pipe

I've noticed that you tend to have a bit of a problem with shanks and the bowl junction can I suggest a tool that may help, take a long thin piece of wood slightly wider than the length of the shank, shape one edge to the profile you want at the juction then cover with your prefered sand paper. The ...

Re: Would Someone Please Tell Me The Proper Placement For the Nub On A Cutty Pipe

It varies slightly between the centre line of the bowl and the back edge, yours is, in my opinion, slightly too far back. Take time to look at classic shapes by the likes of Dunhill or one of the many pipe shape charts online, I have been known to trace an outline on the screen for use as pattern.

Re: 2nd attempt at an egg

A couple of things to think about, spirit stain between each grit of paper- the stain remains in the coarse scratches highlighting where you need to sand, if you warm the briar with a hairdryer or heat gun before staining it will dry in seconds. This may sound silly but get an empty egg shell and st...

Re: Out of the blue proposition...

I recognise those pipes, they are from the Heibi factory that closed down maybe ten years ago. The briar is the cheapest crap you will ever come across, so expect to hit flaws if you drill them. A lot of the stummels are drilled for meeschaum inserts and have very thin walls. These pipes were often ...

BLASTING CONFUSION

I cannot get my head around the whole blasting setup thing, cfm, psi, tank size, nozzle, media etc etc. The more I read the more confusing it gets. This is the compressor I'm looking at: http://deniswilsonofglenavy.co.uk/ingersoll-rand-pb-222001-compressor-p-14863.html From what I can understand this ...

The dirty marks look like oil of some kind.

The briar looks similar to the Chinese stuff this guy uses:

Re: Blasting a bamboo.

The old way of doing it is to rusticate the last bit, I have read that this was the method used by Bo, Jess and others from that era. Not being a blaster yet I can't offer experienced based suggestions but I would have thought that blasting through a layer of hard wax or similar would have the effec...

Re: The whole stem thickness thing

You can make a stem as thick or thin as you want but if the customer doesn't like they won't buy it and at the end of the day that is what is important. £££££££ If you are making a pipe to order you can find out what your customer wants, one of mine likes narrow thick bits as they fit the gap in his...

Thanks guys, I found the second one much easier to understand.

So most of the profiles seem fairly standard are there no special shapes needed or it is a case of developing your own?

Lathe Tooling Profiles

Seeing as I've finally got a lathe what profiles do you folks use for turning the stummel? Most of what came with the lathe is for screw cutting but they are long enough that I can chop off the ends and re-grind them.

Re: delrin issues

I now order 20 metres at a time and then find a drill bit to fit the rod, when I phone in the order I specify that all the rod must be from one casting batch.

I've had mixed batches of 8mm rod that mic up at 7.5 through to 8.5 mm which is next to useless if you are trying for smooth production.

Re: Water cracked my shank?

This has happened to me several times with both estate and being made pipes, the cause was the tennon being to tight or the walls of the mortice being thin. I did this a couple of weeks ago when fitting a bamboo extension, the wall was a bit to thin and the tennon a bit to tight and hey presto insta...

The one at the top of the page is 12 miles from me, the one I got involved a 400 mile round trip. But then mine was £50 cheaper.

They don't make things like they used to.

Way back in '77 my brother bought a 2nd hand Clarke arc welder so that I could repair the garden gate (I was 12). Over 37 years the welder has been well used for the run off the mill jobs and some odd ones, it has been repaired, had cables replaced a new clamp etc. Over the weekend I was building a ...
