Re: clear delrin?
I'll keep you guys posted if I try this. I'm positive it won't make for an invisible join, but seems that it would at least be less obtrusive than solid black. I've been using CA gel for gluing my delrin so this should at least be semi-transparent inside the stem. Stuff's cheap enough I'll give it a...

Re: clear delrin?
I'm actually smoking a pipe I just made with a tortoise patterned lucite stem, and hate that I can see the black tenon sticking into it. I was just wondering if there was a better way to solve this for those of us unable to cut an integral tenon. At the risk of trying to re-invent the wheel, I wonde...

Re: Shank extension technique
Different question but related. Is there any way to keep wood from an extension from getting dirty from ebonite dust while sanding? I recently finished a pipe and wanted to leave the wood extension the natural color, but it got kind of dingy from the black dust. Is it just the wood I was using? It's...

Re: Buffing question
The way I understand it, flannel is best for the final dry buff after waxing and the muslin is better for compounds and wax. I only have one trip buff that I use for all my buffing, although I wouldn't use it to remove stain. Not sure how that fits into your process. If you're talking about changing...

Shank extension technique
I've been looking around for some good instruction on how to do decorative shank extensions and stem inserts without a lathe, but have been coming up short. Mainly I'm looking for what steps to do first. Also want to know if the process is pretty much the same for shanks and stems, or if you have to...

This one is for my wife (shocker, didn't even know she was interested in smoking). She told me she wanted something curvy with thick walls (so her hands don't get hot) and a gentle bend in a reddish brown. Here's the end result. I decided to get away from the catalog shapes and do something a little...

Re: Broken hearted
Had the same problem when I was using kits. I'm convinced the worst briar gets used for kits (although pimo's kits have pretty decent wood). I've gotten 3 blocks from PME now that I'm drilling my own and that wood is great. Next time you end up with briar flaws (barring terminal flaws) just rusticat...

Re: Ref: Pipe making wood dust etc...
A respirator is pretty hot and sometimes uncomfortable, but it works great, so I love it. Also prevents the fogging up of safety glass like dust masks do (for me anyway).

Re: 3/4 bent pot - 2nd non-kit pipe
Oh thanks, It was just something I could do with a nice looking plateau top that had a hole through it. Not very stable, but I have one pipe that fits in it perfectly.prosmoking wrote:Fantastic pipe rest.

Re: Still Trying to Expand My Knowledge Base
What I like to do is take elements from several different pipes and combine them to make something a little more unique. Try copying the majority of a certain pipe, but do something like changing the stem style (possibly borrowed from another pipe) or give it a different degree of bend or something ...

3/4 bent pot - 2nd non-kit pipe
I just finished this pot as a custom order for someone on PSF and despite a couple of quirks, I think it turned out pretty well. I'm still working on getting the gaps out of the stem junction, but it could be worse. I'm amazed at how much easier it is to make a pipe now that I have a drill press. I ...

I've done it, but I'm not too crazy about it. It will help cake form more quickly, but the honey seems to make a rough uneven surface when it bubbles up, so the kake doesn't form evenly. I much prefer the carbon, buttermilk and sour cream mixture.

Love the second one the way the bowl just flows into the bottom part. I also think the black plug looks a bit more elegant than the brass screw on the first.

#9 - Hawk-billiard
This one was also intended to be a classic billiard. This is the last of my kit pipes, so I had to work around the way it was drilled (draught and mortise at the same angle, bowl drilled too deep). Thankfully I can do things just the way I want now that I have a drill press. I think it turned out ra...

I love the shape of this one. I would consider this more of a brandy, but there's nothing wrong with that. Still a great shape and very marketable.

Name this Shape
Just finished up this straight pipe. This is an example of a pipe that starts out as one shape and then somehow morphs into something completely different by the end. I set out to make a billiard, but I wanted to make sure it had nice thick walls. I think this is where the design went sideways. I th...
