Two new pipes, East meets West

Re: The Pipe of King Solomon

This is something that I originally wanted to accomplish, the matching of the grain.. But there were some things that got in my way... First, the bandsaw kerf was wide enough to throw it off a tad.. Then once the over sized ball was turned to rough, the drying process began. The ball was turned in t...

Re: The Pipe of King Solomon

When I opened up that blackwood block, and noticed that red colouring I was like... oh...my...god...

I've never seen that either, not in the hundreds of pieces I've seen. A rare find. It has held the colour perfectly for a few months now, so I don't think it will fade.

Re: The Pipe of King Solomon

Thanks guys! Here is my hand for scale, http://i.imgur.com/135Xg.jpg The bowl does not hold a good charge of regular cut pipe tobacco. I would smoke very fine cut tobacco, I actually really enjoy drum tobacco out of small bowls, I know I know... sacrilege!! In any case, this pipe Is not designed for...

The Pipe of King Solomon

This pipe is designed to resemble the shape of a seed pod growing from the end of a hanging branch. The pod splits open in the middle to reveal a floating seed inside. The pod is made from a black cherry burl that I harvested in northern Ontario. The hinge and clasp is made from solid brass, machine...

Meathod- I respect your craftsmanship, this pipe looks remarkable. Amazing execution. However... I propose a challenge- who can make the most "hobbity" pipe? I gladly accept my own challenge! All that aside- awesome pipe man. Okay, Well, this is my submission, lets see what ya got Yeti! W...

This is what a Hobbit pipe SHOULD look like...

I got inspired by the The hobbit coming out soon.... And thought I would do a middle earth inspired pipe. Bilbo's pipe in the movies look allrriight... but this is my interpretation. Stummel is black cherry burl with African blackwood bowl insert and shank ring. Stem is verawood (should turn more gr...

Re: New pipe beech

For what it's worth, I like it. I imagine that your buttons are not meant to be held in the mouth, but for the pipe to be smoked while holding it in your hand. Is that right? Ha, You know this is something I think about a lot. I must have had this pipe in my mouth 30 times while making i...

New pipe beech

Just a quick and dirty showing of a new pipe, done more in the style you guys are used to, for a change. Stummel is beech burl, with African blackwood bowl insert, bamboo stem, with canary wood and african blackwood. http://i.imgur.com/wqATU.jpg http://i.imgur.com/JzBC0.jpg http://i.imgur.com/hyi9z....

Re: From fresh block to finished pipe in 3 hours.

Hmm, Well maybe it wasn't as wet as it seemed? Were you microwaving it on high? And how long did you allow for a cool-down? How big was the block? From experiments that I did, A roughly 2x3x4" block won't take more than 30 seconds on high. And each time you have to allow a full 5 minutes for co...

Are you sure you didn't accidentally make it into a pipe and then smoke it?

From fresh block to finished pipe in 3 hours.

I wanted to test out the long term viability of a pipe made from wood dried in the microwave. So I just slapped this pipe together from freshly harvested burl. I've come up with a fairly foolproof drying method that I used here. I took the fresh burl and cut into slabs on the bandsaw. Then each slab...
