Re: Pipe of the Psilocybe
Goes without saying, the pipe is AH-MAY-ZING. ...but worth pointing out, the photos are pretty frikkin' awesome too. I'd be interested in hearing about your photo setup. Thank you! For my photos, I use a three point lighting setup. It's three bathroom vanity light fixtures set up on a wooden frame ...

Re: Pipe of the Psilocybe
Thanks everyone! Your kind words are much appreciated! Just beautiful. Those gills are a neat touch, but I'd worry about crushing them. You would think, by looking at them, that they would be fragile. But, since they are grouped so closely together, they are quite durable. I handled them pretty roug...

Re: Pipe of the Psilocybe
This was a commissioned piece that I just finished, feels good to be done this one! Only you can post a non-briar, mushroom shaped pipe on this forum, and be respected for it... Inspiring work as always! I feel so accepted! :D Seriously, that's a very nice compliment! Thanks everyone! An...

Pipe of the Psilocybe
This was a commissioned piece that I just finished, feels good to be done this one! I'm super happy with the final result. The colour scheme really came together. If anyone is interested in seeing how this was made, I put the progress photographs on my blog, http://blog.dmpipes.com/ And it passes a ...

Re: Lathe Tooling Profiles
Carbide insert tooling is not needed for pipe making, buy some lengths of HSS steel and a bench grinder, far more versatile and you will get a much better finish. I use Carbide for 70% of my turning, I love it, simple, fast. Leaves a fine finish. Though, they are just the cheap Carbide bits, nothin...

Re: Lathe Tooling Profiles
All great stuff here.
Has anyone here used the tool holders with the triangle inserts? The ones used for turning steel?

Re: Rasp substitute that won't dull
Disclaimer: All of my advice and experience is based on cutting and roughing out blocks of African blackwood, which is much harder on tools than briar, so my views expressed here may be a tad extreme. I struggled with inadequate tooling for years. Without them, you need patience. It's just that simp...

Re: My new milling machine
This milling machine is for wood mainly, and maybe a bit of copper and brass. The vice setup works just fine for holding the Foredom for now. The base of the vice keeps the shaft at 90 degrees. I do agree that a v-groove would be ideal though. The radial load is no more than I put on it for hand car...

Re: My new milling machine
I built it using parts from a Taig lathe, a Myford milling attachment, and a NEWS Yamatokoki rotary table.sandahlpipe wrote:Cool! Where'd you get that setup?
I made some aluminum brackets and hardware, as well as the wood base.
It's got 5-axis.

My new milling machine
Sort of an unconventional pipe shop tool, but, it'll come in super handy for some of the stuff I want to do soon.

Re: All it would take is someone with the skills...
I saw this a year or so ago, and have been contemplating possible methods to make this work for pipes ever since. I went so far as to buy all the materials I need for wet sand casting and everything... The idea is still on the backburner, but maybe one day you'll see me post something similar... Whe...

Re: Artisan pipe cases
This is something I've been thinking about for quite some time as well. The problems that I've encountered is that if you want the pipe and case to feel harmonious, you'll have to put just as much effort and skill into the case crafting as you put into the pipe, or the case will just look rather che...

Re: Pipemakers, craftsmen? Artists? Engineers? Bodgers?
I think the main problem here is language. A word relies upon a universally understood definition. It's my opinion that certain words, over the years, have become so abused, stretched, and generalized, that they are basically useless. So, when someone says they are an artist, I really have no god da...

Hahah, oh man, these comments are great. The more I think about it, the better I feel. You can't stop people from copying your style, you can only keep moving forward to stay ahead of the competition. I've been trying to figure out whether or not I should keep sharing my process photographs.. I've d...

Thoughts on artistic style and trade secrets.
There are many of you on here who have a very unique style... (walle comes to mind) I like to think that I also have a unique style. Now... over the last year, I've noticed there are people out there ripping off my work. (not on this forum or anyone from it) I'm not going to post links, but I'll jus...
