Re: We've been making video's about pipemaking.

Thanks for the feedback everybody! I really appreciate it. It seems like we'll just keep on keeping on, since everybody likes them the way they are. We won't be making them any longer, since they would definitely start to drag. And as David said, it's better to keep people interested week to week th...

We've been making video's about pipemaking.

Hey all,
I haven't really been active on the forum in a while (been lurking though).

I don't know if any of you have seen our weekly videos, but they might be of interest to you.

I'd love to hear any thoughts you might have about them (criticism included).

Cheers, Jared

Re: Art or Craft?

@d.huber: I think this exposes a lot of weakness in the general attitude about pipes. Good thread. I think this whole debate counterproductive to moving the pipe carving community forward though. Yes, making properly engineered pipes is a "craft." Many people can make holes connect, and ve...

Re: Art or Craft?

Can a thing be art if its creator had no awareness or intention of making art at the time it was made? I don't believe true artists sit there thinking "I'm making ART!" as they do so. Art is NOT fueled by a desire to create art. Real/meaningful art is the expression of something greater a...

Re: Symmetry vs. Asymmetry

Before I start, I just want to say that I am not an expert on this and am simply relating my own observations and thoughts. Well, I AM an expert, and I agree with you. :D Talking about asymmetry is quite difficult, since there are basically two kinds, like george said: some bad, some good. When usi...

Re: Craggy Apple

Don't listen to anyone about the flare being wrong. It's a great call. Don't do it often, but it's a good look to pull out of the hat every once in a while. The button is too small. Well executed, but far too small for someone to comfortably clench. Keep the same proportions and thickness behind the...

That's fantastic. We (j&j) were at the show, and it was hard to find a new pipemakers work who WASN'T fantastic.

Truth.
The face to face contact with collectors and dealers is invaluable. For pipemakers looking to hit the big time, learning how to interact with customers at a pipe show is must, and there is no better place to have your work looked at.

YES!
Sweet, I think you'll do well.
Also, it's much easier to give good and thoughtful critique in person, so that will be fun.

Re: Artisan pipe cases

I think you should do it.
Make a few and see how long it takes, what the material costs are, and come up with an acceptable dollar per hour figure for yourself.
I think if you could make them from $75-$∞ you could do well for yourself.

Re: Ivory Juma poll

Thanks for the input fellas.

I've had good luck with the durability, and I'm a clencher. I think the black juma is a dud (except for shop pipes, which its perfect for)
I'll keep toying with the ivory though, til I can get that shine.

Re: let me help you, help me

I am going to brag now. I made this pipe on a 6x18 atlas from the 50's. I used S&D drill bits and some modified screw extractors for the military mount. Get the machine that will let you make pipes, and if that means you'll have to buy another, better lathe in 5 years, so be it. If you have the ...

Mr. Dibos! I was hoping you'd chime in. I guess I should just work on my finish in process.
So the trick is higher grits of sandpaper as opposed to working up through the buffing wheels.
What's your opinion of the stuff as a stem material? Longevity And comfort?

So I'm not sure if any of you have experimented with Juma (available here http://www.cuestik.com/store/?DEPARTMENT_ID=197 ) but we (J&J) have been playing with it for a year and really enjoy it. Especially the ivory stuff. Juma feels about the same in the teeth as ebonite but doesn't oxidize, wh...
