Re: My Second Pipe ... Poker
Stem material is indeed acrylic from http://pipemakers.org/acrylic_naturals.html
Also, I made sure to tighten the jaws as tight as I could. Once I can afford it I'll get a better chuck setup.
Thanks for the responses.

My Second Pipe ... Poker
My second pipe and first poker. The briar was a seconds and had a crack but thankfully after turning the bowl down the crack didn't go to deep. No flaws in the briar. http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h261/santanablues/100_6399_zps836791ea.jpg http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h261/santanablues/100_...

Re: Forstner bit versus cutting tool for facing stems?
I looked at the pic of the cutter you made and you're starting to get the idea. However, you'll note when the tool is backed out to create the shoulder the sharp point of the cutter is doing the cutting rather than a rounded edge. I cannot tell for sure due to the angle of the picture but it appear...

I don't have the backgear installed yet. I just got done restoring this lathe from a complete tear down. I needed an eccentric lever which just came in the mail so I will be installing that shortly.

Ha. I guess that could cause problems as well. Feel like such a dummy here, but I guess that's why you ask for help.

Drill Tobacco Chamber Charring & Smoking. Help...
I'm drill my first pipe bowl on my SB lathe and I have it on the highest speed without changing gears. While drilling the tobacco chamber it fills the entire workshop with smoke. I pre-drilled the tobacco chamber with a 1/2" bit. Furthermore, I'm using a rounded end 7/8" router bit on a 1/...
