My brother offered me a lathe and a mill free of charge. I was wondering if the mill would get much use in pipe making?

Pipe makers near Los Angeles?
I was wondering if there were any pipe makers in the So Cal area. If possible I would really enjoy a tour of someones shop and see first hand some of the tecniques used. Maybe I could swap something for a tour? I almost feel like I need to see something visualy first and then reading makes more sens...

Discussion, briar, burl, wood.
I looked all over the forum but couldn't find much info on briar. Is briar the only acceptable burl for pipe making. Is there domestic briar that grows wild in the states. All I can really find on briar is that it might refer to wild rose thickets or berry thickets. I have been collecting various bu...

Re: Pipe "Alchemy"

Looking for a book
I wonder if anyone could recomend a book to start with. Preferably a book that deals more with hand tools. I have a drill press and buffers grinders etc but a lathe is out of the question because of space. Also some one who specializes more in primitive styles might be helpful, I do want to dabble i...

I bet if I posted pics of my first pipes I would make everyone feel great about theirs. I might be easy to impress but regardless you impressed me with those first pipes. Steve

Re: Starting out
I am just starting out and have been reading a little bit here and there for the past few weeks. I am facinated to say the least. I started making pipes a couple of months ago by cuttin branches off my plumb tree that had the right angle I was looking for in the stem, leaving the bark on. Played aro...
