Re: Black Walnut

The guys who cut down the trees left two big limbs lying on the edge of the yard; I noticed with interest that they were really knotty and diseased looking. Today I took the chainsaw to one and discovered some really pretty wood in the useable parts; I plan on somehow cutting it down to various siz...

I'd like to see a pic of them in your hand... that's how I usually recognize a magnum size, etc.

Re: No. 15

I wasn't going to comment on the pipe, but now that I look at it I just wanted to make 1 comment: You did a very good job of matching 3 lines (which are many times butchered) that need to be in harmony. The bottom line of the pipe bowl to stem (which is nice and "flowy"), the center line t...

Re: No. 15

I use lamps with a diffuser between them and the pipe. Then I turn off the flash, set the camera on a tri-pod, set the delay to 2 seconds and take the pic. On my camera the tri-pod is important because if you turn off the flash the shutter speed slows down considerably and you have to remain perfect...

Re: New Stamp Logo

Depends on the stamp and the surface... I thank my lucky stars each time I can chuck it up in the drill press and use that with the pipe padded nicely underneath. But how often do you have straight enough surfaces for that to work, right? Brad Pohlmann made the nieftiest little deal. It was a platfo...

Re: FUBAR after head and bend

I basically follow Todd's exact process, minus the glove (that's way too smart for me to have thought of on my own). I would only add that I moved away from the heat gun because the heat was too spread out and I wanted it in a more concentrated area. Not because I wanted my bend in 1 small area but ...

Re: anyone else get this email?

I've received the email more than once. I inquired back as well but am not going to risk the amount of money on a sample that they require. I think a black bamboo sample would cost something like $180 minimum... Having said that, their response did seem normal enough (to me) for an oversees vendor. ...

Re: Green Wood Finish

That's interesting. I've never heard of that - which isn't saying much. :D Seems to me that it might be effective on smaller pieces, if the danish oil slows the evaporation of water somehow, or if it cures and keeps the moisture in place. Dunno. Did you just say oil and cure in the same ...

Hello. There is no here a secret:). The bamboo was a straight line, I about the beginning have drilled it and have then bent above a saucepan about the ferry and everything, was not present there is nothing complex:) I desperately wish I could understand that. It was a straight piece of bamboo. He ...

Re: Black Walnut

I have a lot of black walnut on my new property. I've cut down 1 tree so far and have another to go... I plan on setting aside quite a bit of it... it really is beautiful stuff.

I've heard that a pipe has to be boiled in Mike Butera's saliva and then cured with oil before it will do that. This may be a myth, but I do it anyway just in case. Todd Where would one come across that quantity of saliva (can you reveal your source)? And at what temperature does it boil? Do you fu...

sounds like he was actually trying to get you to seal the wood... which is what we don't want to do AND what shellac doesn't do well (my understanding is that is why its not popular anymore).
