My bad, I'll go do more homeworkTyler wrote:OK...OK...smart aleck answer aside, stainless tubing would certainly help.
Dixie,
Stainless tubing is used in pipe making quite a lot. None of your concerns are an issue.

Re: pencil shanks
Not sure about reinforcements, but I don't think letting the smoke come in contact with metal would do much for taste. Not to mention differential expansion and the chemicals usually on most metals. Thin shanks is pretty much just risky business, meh thinks. Having dealt with smaller pieces of olive...

Re: PIMO order has arrived!
Well I tried the PIMO bit out on a piece of scrap wood, I believe it was white pine? The "lack of spinning true" showed greatly, damn hole wasn't even round! I tried it with the 1/2" pilot hole first, then without. The second was near perfect, minus the wobble from my drill press. Pla...

Re: Pipes possibly causing loss of job for "parphanelia?"
Yup, the world is full of em. Thankfully keeping my nose clean for these past few years has been well worth it. Kinda funny, the countless times that a drug test or search would've been my demise, it never happened. Thank God for that! Now it's just a hassle, but it it rather rewarding to say "...

Re: PIMO order has arrived!
Thanks guys! I think the reason the flashing really irks me is because I remember working in plastic injection molding, and if I let a part leave out to K&N with that much flashing, the next "pornographic" scene woulda been with the boss man's foot and somebody's arse! So I'll be tryin...

Aha! Just got off the phone with a good friend, and it turns out one of the guys in his bluegrass band is a retired machinist who specializes in making replacement parts. Should know this weekend what he would charge to make a new spindle or just replace that bushings. Just hope I get the "frie...

Damn Sasquatch, that was short and to the point, lol. For the final drill of the tobacco chamber I'll be using whatever you would consider a PIMO bit to be?

PIMO order has arrived!
I got my first briar and multiple tools from PIMO today, with stupid fast shipping; paid Thursday, shipped Friday, and was at my PO on Monday. Few simple questions; Is it normal to have lots of chatter marks on briar from the sawing? Do prefab stems normally come with an obscene amount of flashing? ...

Re: Pre mold stem question
If you're using PIMO premolded stems, check the tenon diameter against your mortise drill bit, they're usually pretty damn close (at least the 3 I got today were) David posted a contraption that consists of 2 pieces of wood, a hinge and sandpaper that's pretty nifty just for turning tenons w/o machi...

Re: tool needed to drill the tenon hole into the mouthpiece
A "pen drilling vise" would work most likely. It is made to hold round or square stock. You can find them online at most places that cater to pen makers. It's a funky looking rig, and would still require great care, but would give the perfect 90 degree angle you're looking for. Hope this h...

Re: Custom cases
I haven't the slightest about the 100 year ago cases, but if you've got an old meerschaum case around, slice n dice it to see what the insides are made of. Personally, (even though I know it's not technically relevant) I like the cylindrical boxes Eder posted a "how-to" about not so long a...

I'll second that Tim West @ J.H. Lowe motion. Secondly, it's better to call rather than e-mail, he's a super friendly and helpful guy. Quite frankly I was really impressed with the care given to each order. Not to mention he has good prices, and carries delrin, lucite and a lot of other useful stuff...

Re: Facing/Drilling with a drill press
I looked into what you said, most keep saying I need a chuck removal tool? Looks to me like a glorified crows foot (which I happen to have) I also delved a bit deeper into inspecting it today, I think it may be the bearings because if I turn the chuck, even with the step pulley removed, it has a wob...

Re: Facing/Drilling with a drill press
Thanks, that's what I was thinking just wanted to make sure, I have "thunk" wrong before  Drill press question; For the moment, I have mine mounted to a wooden work table. I do have a steel table for the press, made of angle and plate steel. Welded square by my dad (he's a welder by ...

Facing/Drilling with a drill press
I've got some briar on the way, few questions; My only way of drilling these stummels is my drill press. I'm looking for tips on what order to drill, etc. Do I face it first, or drill the mortise first? And the draft hole after the mortise? I figured face it and drill the mortise and just leave the ...

Grizzly.com sells some decent guitar kits, acoustic and electric.
For knives, I think knifekits.com has some cool stuff. But some of the knife makers on board here can give better direction on that.

Nice pipes. The bit on the second looks a bit thin in my opinion. Nice finish!
