Re: Buffing question

I'll keep that in mind, I have a few estates that wouldn't mind getting stripped down and dressed up.
I think my biggest sin was over charging the wheel, my "designated red tripoli wheel looks like it's been rolled around on Zsa Zsa Gabor's lips!

Re: Buffing question

Okay, kool. Thanks!
You can definitely see the trip on the first wheel, and slightly on the next two. Does this mean I've trashed them? Damn I hope not, only used em once

Re: Where To Buy Buffer?

http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/ww338/Bibo1369/Mobile%20Uploads/a_414_1_2.gif Nifty little diagram I found for determining pulley speeds with a 5", 4", 3", 2" OD 4 step pulley set up on a 1725 RPM motor. I know some brainiacs on here can probably figure this up in there head,...

Re: Where To Buy Buffer?

Wow, that's a kick ass idea Kurt. Scratch my idea, listen to this guy :) Couple questions if I may Kurt; I have a motor and the equivalent of the two pillow blocks w/ shaft (some funky piece out of a cotton mill) Really only 2 questions; is there a particular brand of step pulleys to trust or stay a...

Re: Buffing question

I just tried my hand at putting a finish on this practice pipe. Red trip - 6" sewn wheel - 1630 RPM White diamond -same as trip Carnuba - 6" unsewn - 760 RPM Few questions; the wax still seemed to burn with medium pressure. Could this be because I overloaded the wheel? The trip transfered ...

Re: Where To Buy Buffer?

I have an old home made grinder/buffer that's just an electric motor with a $15 arbor from amazon, and a 5 speed benchtop drill press with a 1/4" to 1/2" adaptor arbor to run 6" buffing wheels that I picked up @ home depot.I haven't a clue as to a prefered brand, but I'd stick with a ...

Re: Alas, after shipping arrive, it's pipes away!

   Goody! I forgot to get the hammer drill... oh well, I've got a claw hammer and a cordless drill, same thing, right? Dammit, I knew that would come back to haunt me :) Truth be known, in my blissful ignorance, I searched eBay for 6" drill bits. Saw SD... and my ADD kicked...

Re: Alas, after shipping arrive, it's pipes away!

I'll try my damndest! :)
I haven't forgotten the kit we talked about, still waiting for that fool to make up his mind
I will be posting pics when I finish for sure, and I can foresee many Q&A's along the way.
Now, my angle grinder will work for finish shaping, right?

Somewhere on the forum here there's a similar question, and stamping was suggested. It gives a name of who to contact to make them and all that, pretty nifty results if I remember right

Alas, after shipping arrive, it's pipes away!

After months of reading through the forum, posting numb skull ideas and general procrastination it's almost time. Waiting for several items to ship, few hunks of briar, stems/stem material and tools then I'll be set for the making of meh first pipes! :) Called Tim West of J.H. Lowe today, super frie...

If you go that route (which I think is a splendid idea) I think you'll be pleased with the outcome greatly. :)

Re: First kit pipe

Congrats on completing your first! The stem would benefit greatly from being flush mounted to the shank. Not sure what the best route to take there would be without a drill press or lathe. Maybe shorten the tenon or drill the mortise deeper? Can't tell from the pics if the plateaux will allow for a ...

Re: Disc sander speed...

I'm glad to hear you say that. I kept reading the new posts wondering if I was the only person on here w/o a variable speed grinder. I have the option of 1725 RPM, by hand or.... well, that's it.

Re: An Editorial

To get pics to act right you have to use a photo share site like photobucket or something.
Just copy and paste the link with

before it and

at the end of it. It took me forever to get it right, I believe it's the "Direct link" URL? Can't remember exactly at the moment.

Re: 2010-2011 Pipe In The Hat trade

Those dates and that plan work for me. Since this is modeled after Mr. Wallenstein's pipes I dropped the "kit" option and just ordered everthying necessary for a completely handmade stummel, but did order a pre-fab stem to make due. Definitely gonna bea fun venture!

That is indeed very helpful, many thanks Eder! I would attempt to phrase that in french, but for the life of me I can't remember anything from my French class except the females sitting by me in there ;) Francais was fun Seriously, thanks though! :) Oh, I remember the teachers parting words to me we...

Re: Scotch brite on contrast staining?

That's another thing I was searching for was a "grit equivalency" I have a range of grits on the way, the highest being 800. I can't find squat higher than 400 at the "all in a box" hardware stores anound here. I'm finally suited (as far as tools go at least) to go through the pr...

Scotch brite on contrast staining?

I've been toying with a "junk pipe" for practice with finishing. I know there are extremely varied opinions on how to get the best finish, just a curiosity here; I tried staining black @ 200,320 then topcoat @ 420 (waiting for finer grit paper, should be here this week) With using the blac...

They can really do that? WOW. No way I could work for folks like that. Like they say, there's always somebody worse off than yourself. That's seriously crazy though. Indeed it is. How messed up is that. We are all so PC now anything smoke is evil. There is at least one gentleman on another forum I'...
