Re: Just in time for hunting season

Wild pigs are some mean SOB's, especially when they're cornered. We always keep one handy just in case things go bad. In that case, you should post a sign that says "BEWARE OF PIG." When things do go bad, do you just turn the pig loose and let it raise hell, or is there a more defined met...

Re: Just in time for hunting season

I meant no disrespect by the first message, just a lot of people around here who don't hunt cclaim that it's not necessary to have a "catch dog" on a hunt. But I've seen a catch dog save somebody's a$$ on more than one occassion. Down here there's enough hogs they're more like varmints tha...

Re: Just in time for hunting season

I doubt that javelin is the right word, just what we've always called em. Just a bowie knife tied to the end of a straight limb/small tree to stick the hog whenever the dogs get it bayed up in a creek bed. I don't blame you for using a gun, smarter. Wild pigs are some mean SOB's, especially when the...

Re: Just in time for hunting season

[quote For the record I do know a guy who loads up a bunch of drunken rednecks in a truck, drives them to a remote location in the South Carolina mountains, and turns them loose after the dogs in hopes of jumping on a wild boar armed only with a 13" bowie knife... I fear my testosterone levels ...

Re: Just in time for hunting season

@ Todd; your idea of hunting from the truck is more like what actually happens in the south.
As for "chasing" turkeys, you have to head em off at the pass.
@ Kurt; true dat, true dat

Re: Is this safe for burl?

 Sadly I haven't got but about 2 good swigs of shine left, so it's designated for the chamber treatment. I'm not too worried about a bad flavor, just the poisons hanging around after the alcohol has evaporated. I've got a good friend wanting it, so I'll give her a test drive before it leaves my...

Re: Is this safe for burl?

Yes suh', come straight outta dem' dar' hills ;) New dumb question here; I tried what someone here (can't recall who exactly) has said worked to clean the really nasty gunk out of the rustication, which is diluted DA with a soft bristled tooth brush. In the process, a wee bit seeped over the rim of ...

Yes! Thank you Nate, I couldn't find the pic I had in mind for an example. But those are what I was getting at.
Thanks again! :)

Re: Is this safe for burl?

Will do :) I'm not sure of the proof, but I know when swirled you get bubbles top and bottom, (a safety test that can actually determine how the shine was made and whether or not to expect lead poisoning) it burns clear and uber hot. On the note of flavors imparted, this was made with peach mash so ...

Re: Cherrywood

Ah, I see... the illusion works in your favor, nice. I may be wrong in what I'm calling the danish style stem. I'm thinking of the stems you typically see on pipes of similar shape made from plateau briar? Basically rather than the smooth transition from stem to shank, the stem is smaller where it i...

Re: Cherrywood

Very nice Steffen! I particularly like the shape and the way it shows the birdseye on the rim. Just a thought, I wonder what that would look like with a danish style stem? Either way you have yet again shown the true beauty of the wood, and your magnificent carving skills :) Bravo! One question (mer...

Re: Is this safe for burl?

Denatured alcohol is treated to make it poisonous, any high proof alcohol will do the job with Everclear being the most popular. I once used some poteen (potcheen) which runs at about 180 proof, it's amazing stuff, Isopropyl Alcohol is probably the most frequently reccomended. If you have a pipe wh...

Re: Amphora pipes; suuggestions?

Thanks David. I've been roaming around ebay right regualarly as of late, finding some deals and finding some fools. I'm also learning that it's a good idea to read the "fine print," because several sellers have no clue about the pipes they're selling. I've tried searcing for the estate lot...

Re: Fun with Stummels continued Dublin #2

Just to see if my eyes serve me rightly, on most other Dublins isn't the top just a bit wider at the rim than here?
I've seen Dublins like this elsewhere though

Amphora pipes; suuggestions?

Just looking for opinions on the Amphora Xtra pipes, can't get a clear opinion searching online. I know they're from Holland and often grouped with Big Ben's, and some rate them above Dr. Grabow. Being new to pipes that leaves a big "quality range" to decipher with my feeble mind. With the...

Re: Is this safe for burl?

Would denatured alcohol work as well for this? Just curious because I have a lot of it and an estate in dire need of cleaning/detox from the previous owners misuse. P.S.- thank you David for the advice on starting with estates, I'm throughly enjoying this venture :) On the subject of the "dange...

Re: Question on polishing stem on an estate pipe

Ok, thanks! I realized that I had it set torque heavy at low rpm's, set the speed higher and it worked beautifully. I did get a little over zealous with the red compound because it transferred from the pipe to the white compound wheel when I switched up. I'm going to try buffing most of the compound...

Re: Question on polishing stem on an estate pipe

Thanks:) Here's another idiotic beginners question I can't seem to find an answer for; I got myself 3 buffing wheels for my drill today, and they came with emory, tripoli and white compounds. I tinkered with them for a brief while before work today and just wanna make sure that I'm not screwing up f...
