Re: Making a new stem for a Corn cob?

Thanks guys. I've already eliminated the filter with a dowel rod. Just measred the depths on the stem & shank then drilled the holes from both ends starting with a 3/64" bit progressing up to a 7/64" bit. Then used the center point ona forstner bit to make the shank end conical, and ta...

Re: Question on polishing stem on an estate pipe

Forgive my ignorance here, but it's a good thing that they dissolve quickly? I know it cleaned very well. This is my first estate, and I've found how some people clean the stem, but was just curious as to if I could just buff it afterward or if there's an extra step I was missing? I did ream the bow...

Question on polishing stem on an estate pipe

Just curious, what would be recommended to polish the stem on an estate pipe? I've scrubbed it down with denatured alcohol, inside and out to sanitize it. It's hardly been smoked at all, whoever did smoke it the few times it was used, added a "pipe screen" and didn't use tobacco (the basta...

Re: Am I, or the 'baccy' to blame here?

I had thought about that, how the prices I'm finding are drastically lower than other places. I think it may be because most of it's coming a short distance to get here, and they buy in ridiculously huge bulk amounts (shipment came in while I was there today) They're also trying to draw in more pipe...

I doubt his would be used for tobacco!
On the other hand, the orange M&M, may be the one to look out for :)
Sadly, neither of them will return my calls no matter how much I stalk them so I'm stuck with a Missouri Meerschaum hoping no one will know the difference

Making a new stem for a Corn cob?

I've got a corn cob pipe from MM, the stem is plastic (they left some of the flashing for me:)) What I'm wondering is honestly opinionative, is what material to use. The shank is wood of some sort, not sure what kind, and I'd like to try making a wood stem replacement as well as an mortise ring to l...

Re: Am I, or the 'baccy' to blame here?

Thanks! Oh believe you me, I intend to. I ventured inside the walk in humidor at the tobacco shop today and found probably 40+ different tobaccos, some even local blends (Gamecock game day, tiger trap, Palmetto blend, etc.) all of them jarred, but @ $1.59/oz, I can't complain. I've been amazed at ho...

Re: Am I, or the 'baccy' to blame here?

Alas, twas the tobacco. I got some "Red Cap blend no. 7" today as well as 2oz of Petersen's "Nougat Supreme" I've smoked probably 4-5 bowls of the red cap (switching to my corn cob while the briar rests) and loved it. No bite, no gurgle and 10X better taste and hardly any re-ligh...

Re: nosewarmer

Nice. The rustication is a plus, did you use a small wire wheel on that or what? I like it either way. It is a unique shape, sort of horn-ish, kinda dublin, and a few others as well. I believe that may be a shape name all your own, but I'm at a level just below novice so I'm sure some of those here ...

Re: Purchased my first Briar today; some issues/questions

Thanks! I'll have to check those out.
We've got a few tobacco shops around here, but only one that rates as much more than a discount cigarette store. I'm hoping to catch them open soon to give em a look see.
Thanks again!

Re: pipe 2, the "ear pipe"

If you're going to be using local wood, you want to make sure it isn't one of the many woods that produce very harmful byproducts. You should be able to google a plant toxicity list. You should be able to utilize some of the sculpting tools for pipe making; files, rasps, sandpaper, etc. Check out Pi...

Re: Am I, or the 'baccy' to blame here?

I was thinking along the chemistry lines of how Beatus mentions the sweettness of VA's where others only taste "blach" In our chemistry class we did a "taste test," everybody a strip with some chemical on it, was told to taste it and report what it tasted like. There were reports...

Re: Am I, or the 'baccy' to blame here?

It probably boils down to a handful of reasons that can all contribute. Chemistry, moisture, garbage internals, smoking style, and which constellation Mars is currently traversing can all have have contribute. All I know is that I never suffer when smoking Balkan blends, and other blends heavy on L...

Re: Am I, or the 'baccy' to blame here?

Kurt, you hit a pretty dead on definition. I was unaware that it lasts a couple of days, that may be part of the reason this seems to be occuring so often it may just be hanging around. I gave consideration to the tobacco being too wet last night and let some air dry for my last smoke of the night.....
