Re: Forum maintenance - 2019.07.28
UPDATE The board software is now running in the latest version. I've also fixed the Tapatalk plugin and enabled the board with Tapatalk. The old theme that I put in is no longer supported in this version of the software, but I will remedy that soon - as soon as I find a theme that doesn't look like...

Re: Detailed, well-shot, mini-documentary of Former at work
Why why why does anyone drill the chamber first?!?! as in before the airway? or as in before shaping? I do it the same way honestly. First I shape the bowl, because it's the main component and I find it easier to adjust the shank to match the bowl than the other way around. Since on classic shapes,...

I've still got one in the works, but I could use the extra days to increase my chance of finishing it

Since I've been experimenting lately, are we allowed to use resin casting? I've got a few funky ideas

Re: #1 newbie Billiard (or turd?)
I'll offer my rookie opinion. First of all, much respect, you've done an outstanding job at a "first" pipe. It seems like you've done your research and have applied much of that knowledge. That being said, the most obvious "flaw" I'd say on this one are the sidewalls on the bowl....

Re: PITH 2019!!!
as in on the end of the shank? Assuming there's still a decent stem attached (who wants plateaux in their mouth?) I don't see why that should be a problemBluesytone wrote:can the live edge be on the smoking end?
I recently made one like that:

Re: PITH 2019!!!
Those terrible examples are pretty much indistinguishable from the first 15 pipes I did before I decided to start trying to get serious about 2 years ago. What's sad is that I thought they were pretty good at the time because they looked like every other 'Danish freehand' blob I'd ever seen. ...

Re: PITH 2019!!!
]I agree, perhaps we could limit "live edge" by adding another criteria through another vote pool? For example a dublin or cutty... Maybe instead requiring a shape it makes more sense to require that each maker document their design process in some way. For newbies like me, it can be as s...

Re: PITH 2019!!!
ah what the heck, count me in! I'll try to get one done this year :P Although I do personally believe we should restrict the category slightly by saying "No 'Danish' freehands". You see the PITH is all about becoming a better pipe carver. If there is ever a "shape" abused by new ...

Re: Need help with chuck
The Rawkrafted one is less than I paid for mine by a pretty wide margin. Just a good self-centering Chuck isn’t cheap. You can make an independent jaw chuck work, just make sure you’re aligning the bottom of the holes, not just the start. When you drill a hole in a board, all you worry about is usu...

Re: Draft hole in stem and stummel size
The only reason I use 5/32" is because I can't bloody find a tapered drill bit in europe... I just made my own 3mm tapered bit. tried that. Worked like crap. Bought a few more in the US. I've got 4 orso tapered bits from the US and since they'll easily stay sharp for many many pipes, I'll be c...

4mm in the stummel, 3mm in the stem, tapering toward the button where it flares. I'll bet you Brits have some fancy-schmancy name for miles, gallons, and pounds, too, eh? Everyone knows you drive on the wrong side of the road out of pure contrariness, but sticking with your silly milli -this...

Re: Draft hole in stem and stummel size
I just started pipe making, and I’m getting a lot of various advice on what size bits to use. Some say use a 1/16 tapered bit from the tenon end on acrylic but is this done on vulcanite/ebonite as well? then a flat tipped 1/16 bit from the button, then use a 1/16 side cutting bit to make button. Bu...
