UberHuberMan not wanting to be completely contrary :takethat: but i would concur and disagree with your first statement/paragraph, having long association with both types(since 15yo) but no expertise, both skill sets have differences and similarities. :fencing: I would say the initial learning curve...

Re: Stem Inlays
way to go sas
for facing a surface plate or piece of plate glass and sand paper works well
wet the flat surface to make the sand paper stick then sand each side until the desired thickness is reached.
works for all materials
metal lathe not required

that's just silly
a Swiss Army knife that measures nearly 25cm, weighs close to 3.25 kilograms
that's not a pocket tool that's one to tow on a sled, like smoking tobacco in a swiss alpine horn
merry christmas to you all

Re: To Lathe or Not to Lathe, that is the question
sas is right, sometimes just wont be enough! with lathes i have found that while bigger is good, heavier is better we are not beach boys - there are no good vibrations  ask if you can try before you make up your mind, over here - uk, some places have demonstration areas set up. regards dave

Re: To Lathe or Not to Lathe, that is the question
Bobostro61 the lathe swings 10" ie 5" from centre to bed with mt2 tapers, so yes you can fit a jacobs chuck in the tailstock this lathe needs to be bolted down to something really solid to minimise vibrations fwiw & imho a good small wood lathe is more versatile than a small metal lath...

Re: more silver spinning
pipeguy that's a fascinating video, i cannot really really comment on the pressing section of the vid but the spinning is very interesting. it seems to be the creation of a custom form turned to fit on a metal thread or collet, then re-applied to the lathe and the final form turned. the form also fu...
