Re: Making a pipe with no electricty
I made my first two pipes with a cordless drill and files as well. they were absolute garbage BTW. I think the issue you will run into is finding a bit that will fit in a brace, AND is capable of making a smooth, rounded chamber. You can drill the draught hole and cut the slot using a pin vise.
Re: Billiard
I really like this one. Billiards are tough. nice job!
Re: Pick axe
my opinion. finish looks good and I like the plateau top. The bowl seems to lean back towards the shank, I would like a little more cant forward. The saddle portion of the stem should be shorter.
Re: Rhodesian
I agree with Ryan and Wayne. I would say the stem could be thinned out from tenon to button. It needs a steeper taper.

Re: Machined pipes.New Factory in Nashville.
Well Scottie, you may have to try a different approach. Maybe a switchblade beard comb that is hidden in a 3rd calabash chamber. Or maybe you could inlay the PBR logo into a premolded stem.

Re: Machined pipes.New Factory in Nashville.
I had made between 50 and 75 pipes before i ever sold one to a pipe smoker, and that was at the urging of a few other pipemakers that had convinced me it was time to get them out there. I still feel like i sold a little too early and would like to have a few back. What really kills me about instagra...

Wakizashi is preferred for indoor cutting, although a plasma cutter is also an option.

Re: Cutting raw meerschaum
I don't think it will matter too much. I let the block dry for a day or so just so it wasn't totally wet on the outside when cutting.

Re: bowl coating discoloration
I've seen mold grown on lumber, drywall, books, ceiling tile, and even black coffee. It isn't necessarily the presence of sugar that triggers mold growth. I'm betting if you left unfinished briar on the floor of a damp basement it would grow mold in about a week.

Re: Cutting raw meerschaum
I had a large lumpy block of meerschaum last year. I used the bandsaw to cut the wet block. It was super easy to cut into an ebauchon type shape and chuck into the lathe.

Worst of the year? We were 5 posts away from another stinky ebonite situation. I was really enjoying watching the lava creep toward the village.

Yeah, thats never coming out. It has been absorbed by the briar and goes all the way through the Walls of the bowl.
