You are on reddit right? thats a built in captive audience situation for you where you know some of those guys on a personal level. Make a serious switch from Ryan as some dude, to Ryan the pipe Prince. When you cease to be a guy, and become a pipemaker people tend to notice. (pipe King is a registe...

Re: Stem work equal to the best I've ever seen in my life...
That is a fairly accurate assessment of the Chicago show Todd. But i also saw some overpriced dog shit getting hard looks, and occasional sales. Its kind of fun to see, in a stomach turning "he isnt actually...? no... HE DID!!??" sorty of way. but that is a fraction of a fraction of a perc...

Re: FYI
I generally only put tobacco in my pipes, but to each his own. Ginger snaps are pretty far out there though.

its tough to sell pipes when you aren't at the show. my sales percentage drops drastically if I don't attend. down to the 0% range. People want to meet you and get the warm fuzzies before they buy, especially if you are relatively new. at least in my experience.

Re: Stem work equal to the best I've ever seen in my life...
Time is irrelevant in my case. Contacts, exposure, shows are. But that's me. true! People have short memories. A collector friend of mine said he was thinking about getting rid of a pipe by pipemaker X. Pipemaker X recently stopped making pipes, so i told him if he really feels like selling the pip...

Re: OK, it's time for another ShitStorm thread
I know a guy that has been making high level pipes for 15 years, and his routine is very similar to what is shown. Outline, measurements, reference lines, everything. On almost every pipe.

Re: not sure if stem or shank question...
yes. several ways to do this too. attatching the stock to a faceplate, pin gauges, milling machine, or lapping plate.

Re: not sure if stem or shank question...
A boring bar, forster bit, or end mill would do the job while the stock is still round on the lathe. Part it off and shape to the shank.

Re: not sure if stem or shank question...
basically, yes. but wouldn't it be easier if you didn't have to face it down? if the briar was already finished.

Re: not sure if stem or shank question...
Who made that piece of junk! Nevermind, it's in the photo tent right in front of me. There is a male female joint. You can see the orange stain of the briar in the photo. Mortise is drilled at the normal point in the process. You can cut the inset with a lathe tool or a forster bit. It depends on th...

Re: rough shaping mostly done....
not so much a critique as a suggestion. The stem is much easier to finish if you do all of the shaping and sand it up to around 300 before you bend it. Occasionally you will have to go back and massage an area after its bent, but the majority of the work should be done while the stem is straight. if...

Re: Some advice?
you can get a clean bevel with just your thumb and sandpaper, guys do that all the time. The problem is you probably aren't going to get all of the the gouge with just a bevel. Most likely you will have to bring the top of the bowl down a bit first.

I knew there was a reason I liked you george. That's the pipe community in a nutshell. The last thing you need is another pipe laying around the house. But that isn't the really the point is it? Congrats sir. And thank you.

Re: Flying with my pipe
Bring your pipes in your carry on. Make sure you put your tampers in the checked luggage. I have heard some reports of tampers being labeled as potential weapons. I throw pipe cleaners and tobacco in with the checked luggage as well. Just the pipes go with me. I do my best to avoid confrontation wit...

I came. I saw. I made offensive jokes. I even sold a few pipes. Seriously though, I met a lot of great people, and had a lot of fun. Its a shame that Chicago only comes once a year.
