Re: Stem work equal to the best I've ever seen in my life...
I met Kent at the Pre-show friday morning. i had looked at his pipes online before, so i kind of knew what to expect. As George said, they aren't mind blowingly amazing museum pieces, but they are very well executed, even great pipes, especially for the length of time he has been making pipes. He and...

If you use a clean wheel between compounds, before wax, and after wax, it seems to give a bit deeper more even shine. it may not work for everyone. try it and see if it works for you.

Re: Tobacco chamber shapes. . .
I freqently drill with more than one bit, I frequently modify the shape of the chamber by hand... I think as long as you can get tobacco in it and it comes to some kind of slightly roundish bottom, it'll be okay. That said I just sold a pipe to a guy and it had a 3/4" tapered chamber and he's ...

Re: Wet Sanding Issue
i did this for quite a while before i learned that the time saved wet sanding the junction is lost when you have to resand the junction. now i generally wet sand the stem, wet sand the bowl(if necessary) but not the shank or junction. Wet sanding with alcohol will make less impact, but you will stil...

i was thinking about the same company george. one that would have a use for briar, ebonite rods, stain, and all of that acrylic. One that would sell all of the tooling and publishing material to steve and consume the rest.

I would want to know as well, both so I could address the concerns with the customer, and know where the perceived faults lie. scottie, didnt you buy a metal lathe a year and a half ago? are you still waiting for parts?

hmm. it certainly has a familiar ring to it. almost as if some of the words were replaced with synonyms... True story. At my last job there was a "female" that looked suspiciously like a male. it was the subject of conversation for a few weeks. Her last name was stansberry. how odd is it t...

70's era dunhill. just needs a quick buff. if you cant do it george, send it to the briar lab and we will take it from there. i would like to examine it closer anyway. Maybe i can emulate that button design, given enough time and the right steak knife.

truly amazing work. I think George should have his own reality show. Maybe put him in a shop with the Vermont boys and watch the magic unfold. George Abe Steve and J.T in a room should be more than entertaining.

with steves jaws torque the hell out of it when you chuck it up. the deeper the the grooves bite the easier it is to line back up. Also what Todd suggested will help a lot. I found when using those jaws I could rechuck easily if i marked which jaw was on which side of the block and always rechuck th...

I was at the Vegas show this year, and I assure you there were a lot of pipemakers hanging out together, and yes they were still crying about the state of things.WCannoy wrote:

Re: Staining the shank face
I use the tailstock to do a very small countersink right after drilling the mortise. After the staining process you can use the same countersink by hand to take any stain off. It tends to leave a more even bevel. Some guys stain the countersunk portion as well. others go as far as staining the morti...

As a friend George I feel the need to tell you your curmudgeon is showing again. :D growing a beard is the first and most important step. Looking like a lumberjack in general will work, but you need to get your mug out there more. You almost had it with your YouTube videos. You were a little too inf...

Although I don't care for his pipes very much, he seems like a very genuine guy from my brief interaction. He started doing YouTube videos because he didn't have anyone in his area that was into pipes and wanted to have interactions with other pipers in a pipe club type way. It blew up and now he ha...
