Re: 1st Billiard

Not bad! the shank pinches a little bit before the stem/stummel junction. You have a tapered shank, then it broadens at the junction before tapering again. I have trouble with that too. try to put a straight edge on top if the shank. That will show you where more material has to be removed. The same...

Re: latest efforts

Are you referring to the button thickness or the overall width of the stem at the button? they probably are a little tall, and possibly a little to big from front to back. I started making buttons that were the complete opposite, too short and narrow. When i corrected them, they went the other way. I...

latest efforts

I hesitated to post these last few pipes because of the poor quality of my camera. I built a quick light tent, and I think that helped a little. I'll post these in order of completion. The first was a rhodesian for the PITH, and my first integral tenon. The transition was weak and the tenon a little...

Re: Billiard Contest

thanks for hosting guy, there are some great looking pipes in the lot! #7 was my effort, which has A stem made from the "Wayne" material (not a preform). I really don't know if it is good or bad that it looks like a preform. Regardless, congrats to the winner. I am interested in seeing the...

Re: Let's Talk Aesthetics

This is why I am hesitant to make comments or critiques on a lot of pipes posted. here. #1. i haven't mastered the craft side, as todd mentioned. #2. anything that is posted as a response that doesn't relate to the fundamental shaping is, to me at least, just my opinion on aesthetics which doesn't h...

Re: My First Pipe: In Process

Looking good! how did you get such a nice briar block for your first? I have never had a block with grain that looked good. Actually I just drilled a plateau that looked pretty good, only 8 to 10 fissures spots and splits.

Re: Second pipe - First Billiard Attempt

Looks good for a second pipe. The biggest thing that sticks out is the length and shape of the stem. It looks like a cartoon character streched it like a rubber band. It abruptly tapers then kind of maintains that taper through the rest of the stem. The stummel shows a lot of the same issues i had w...

Re: pipe in the hat trade?

or just rip off some dunhill shape and make it look like a cheap peterson. I have to try to make the stem/shank fit better, but I think this is my PITH pipe. I have some touching up to do tomorrow. I will post in the gallery when it is totally finished. http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n519/fuchi...

that is the date Kurt set. Im sure there will be some people that have to bail out, as well as some that wont make the deadline, so it depends on the participants.

Re: Nooooob question

Random was a rogue who rebelled against the established pipemaking community. He was a rebel and a traitor. He ruffled many feathers with his nougat stummels and petrified donkey shit stems. His posts were expunged from the record. Let that be a lesson to all the radicals out there who want to make ...

Re: No Workshop- whats the best way?

I used the same setup for my first few pipes. Sandpaper, files, cordless drill, and a handsaw. It is possible, just extremely slow. You could buy more tools, but it will just help you ruin blocks faster. Start with what you have, and finish a few. If they turn out well you have the option to invest ...

Re: first bamboo

I think this is around the 15th? for me. the buttons on most of those are embarrassingly awful. I think patience is the key to finishing. I am A 90% guy. once something if functional,it's finished. I have to learn to take the extra time to make it look good too.

Re: first bamboo

andrew: I cut 3 stems for the pipe. The first was short, and didnt look quite right. The second was a bit longer, and still looked off so I made the third about the same length as the stummel/bamboo. I will try masking the bamboo in the future. I didnt mean to make it sound like the bamboo was bad. ...

first bamboo

I've been messing around with this pipe since Ernie sold me the bamboo. I have screwed up some bamboo, and a few stems and finally decided to give it a quick finish and start smoking it. The shank of the stummel looked good before shaping the block, but is obviously way too long now that it is finis...

Re: A few more

You are right about the thin walls, I should have just bored it at 3/4" instead of 1". It looked fine untill i started to taper the top of the bowl more. I just couldnt get the taper to look right without thinning it out too much. the result was very thin walls and very little taper. I use...

A few more

I realize that in posting my last few pipes somehow i missed this one. It is sort of a stack, made with some of the horn that Ernie was selling a few months ago. It had A few flaws in the shank that forced it to be A virgina flake pipe. The pictures will show some scratches, I have been smoking it f...
