Re: Group Ebonite buy

I was going to send you a couple of tins from the cellar for basically taking on debt and going miles out of you way to help us out. Just didnt want to send something you dont like, and couldnt get a good idea from you website. whats your pref? edit: should have said from the cellar, not for the cel...

Re: Lathe parts HELP

101 289 10 is the model number i found. go to sears.com and click on the parts direct tab at the top. it should redirect you to a schematic of the lathe.

Re: Lathe parts HELP

Just did some research on the internet, I found a 1930's craftsman wood lathe model number on a random website. If you plug the number into the sears website the parts are still available. the pulley for this one is only $564. you might as well get two. but seriously it might be an option to check i...

Re: Looking for cracked blocks

ive been buying very small blocks from Tim West at jhlowe.com they are 2.50 each, you can buy 10 blocks and 2 1/2" by 20" ebonite rods for about $50. thats cheap enough to mess around with and not be too scared about screwing a few up. might even get a few micro pipes out of it. The sizes ...

Re: Chubby "Liquidambar"

I really like the inlay, though i have no idea what you were saying. looks like a maple leaf. makes sense that maple suryp is "liquidamber". It seems like the stem could use a flair, more like a fishtail bit to add some style. I made a similar pipe that didnt turn out half so nice. congrats!

Re: Group Ebonite buy

im in for at least 2 black and 1 cumberland. The price seems the same as buying from pme, except you are getting a 40" length, rather than 20" at pme.

Re: 6 7 8 9 and 10

thanks boekweg, i appreciate the encouragment. I enjoy making pipes, and probably will always do so, even though I may never master it. Feel free to critique. I didnt provide a lot of pictures mostly because im already aware of a lot of the flaws. Sas, i didnt really notice the wobbles untill i look...

6 7 8 9 and 10

I've been working 6 days a week lately, so havent felt like taking any photos of completed pipes. Here are the photos of 6 7 8 9 and 10, in order of completion, just to show I have been doing something with my time. Theres only one pic of each, and then a picture of all 5 together. I dont want to bo...

Re: Group Ebonite buy

Does anyone know what the minimun order for ebonite from germany is? I would be interested in some rods if i could get a ballpark price per rod. It seems crazy expensive to order 1 or 2 from a briar supplier in the U.S. i would rather buy a few more rods, than to pay shipping 2 or 3 times from PME.

Re: AAA ebonite

I didnt even think about it, just went with AAA like the OP did. The nice thing about AAA is they are alway there when you need them. AAP never responds to my onstar.

Re: AAA ebonite

I was going to place an order last week from AAA for a few ebonite rods. While going through the checkout process, I was reading about their ebonite. The page said specifically that their ebonite is not recommended for pipe stem making because of the inclusions, and the fact that most stems are turn...

Re: Forstner Bit produces Tapered Face

Todd, Yes, I am using delrin. I have ordered some turning chisels to make an attempt at true tenons. The play isnt extreme, its just noticable. I dont know why wood lathes have it. I have a temporary shim for now just to take up some of the slack. I will probably end up ordering some brass shimming ...

Re: Forstner Bit produces Tapered Face

i have been using a 1 1/2" freud bit with the point filed off, and it doesnt give me great results on a wood lathe either. Usually the face is square, but it doesnt give a great finish. also if i dont start the process with a different bit, its hard to get the tailstock centered due to the play...

Re: new pipe

thanks sas, I will try your approach on the next stem. I guess everyone starts out without a clear idea on button shape, and develops their own style. This was my first serious attempt at cutting the slot and button, I hacked at the first two I made and got lucky they were anywhere close to button s...

new pipe

here is my latest pipe. I picked-up some super small blocks with my last order, so I have a few more short fatties on the way. This pipe is actually natural, just an very dark block with wax finish. It has the usual sandpits and a sand crater. i had a lot of trouble defining the transition on such a...

Re: 4th pipe. billiard

tilted pot...tilted pot. Just for the record i did NOT steal mikes tilted pot design from his website. I dont have the $900 to back up the copyright infringement. if this pot is tilted, its by accident. There is a difference between the pipes, the shore D hardness of mikes pipe is waaaaaay higher th...

4th pipe. billiard

I finished this pipe a few days ago, but the lady lost our camera. This pipe went together pretty smoothly, I just had a few problems.the walls looked a little thick, so i beveled the inside of the chamber, not sure if the photos show taht. When i was finishing it up, i was smoothing the face of the...

Re: 3rd pipe

My brother came over today and checked out pipe 3 and 4 (which isnt posted yet). The first thing he said was "this is a big sandpit on the bottom?" followed by "the bottom isnt symetrical." i guess if its that obvious to a novice like him it is obvious to everyone. i'll make sure...
