Re: What to look for in a used Foredom

I own the Chinese SR knock off foredom. I use it for slot work exclusively, and it works great. Maybe it wont last a lifetime, but at 10 minutes of work per pipe it will last several years.

Re: A request from me to you PMF'ers

1. Contrary to your statements, I think it would be beneficial to see you file and sand the whole time. There are aspects of filing and sanding technique that can't be taken for granted. 2. Links to the products (G-Flex epoxy, etc.) that you mention would be valuable. I took an educated guess on th...

Re: Chicago reports anyone,anyone???

I had fun and sales were good. Most of the pipe makers that I talked to did well and all around it seemed like a good show. Re: hipsters, it would be in all our best interests to not assume that every person we see at a pipe show that is young, has a different sense of style, etc, is a clown. all t...

Re: Meerschaum mortise...

If you ever watched a video of meerschaum carvers fitting a stem you would see its done in about 30 seconds. drill with a hand drill, chase the hole with a tap and sink a threaded tenon into it. no glue, no waiting, no precision. stem just pops into the insert and the shank is shaped to fit the stem...

Re: A must-read for all pipemakers who sell their work

from the context it was hard to tell that it sold during the conversation. Its mind boggling to me. I would guess someone was tipped off to the unusual amount of activity and either pulled it down to stop the chatter, or more likely pulled it as a joke.

i missed the surprise, although i did get rather bored reading the responses and skimmed after the first 8. its an absurd price no matter who made it. My first impression when i saw it? i would have blasted it! lol

Re: Is this pipe worth $470?

I would like to see A few more photos, but i think you have your answer. One or two of those issues could be overlooked, but I see about 6 things that stick out. a few of them are shortcuts, a few are errors, and a few are things that i have been taught are just plain "wrong". whether or n...

Re: Crap...

I've said this before a few times, but i scribe a line with an exact-o knife while the rod is in the chuck. I have a square tool stock in a quick change holder that is set to the centerline of the lathe minus the thickness of the knife blade. it takes about 3 seconds to drop the tool in the quick ch...

Although Bruce and George now share curmudgeon duties, they can't pen a cutting phrase of prose like Rad, who said simply "that's fucking ugly." Such economy of words.

Re: Another tough one (Poul Ilsted faceted shank re-stem)

I love seeing the work, but hate it because you make it look so easy. I think you should start documenting your facial expressions and curse words used during the repair. You have it backwards. The WWE facial expressions and curse words tend to come out when I'm forced to deal with idiot humans. Of...

thats a beautiful lathe, but it looks like a jet 920 with a thyroid condition. on off switch convieniently placed 18" off the ground, and dead in line with the chuck. nice.

PME faux ivory

I came across this material in a catalog that showed up unannounced at the Briar Lab. It looks like the same material that PME used to sell. I know a few guys here use this stuff from time to time. Steve probably stocks it as well, although I haven't seen it on his website. here is the link if anyon...

With the amount of cigars, pipe tobacco, and beer that Scottie is hoarding the forum should be about to smoke and drink happily for the next 10 years, as long as she doesnt mind going rogue and selling them all on the black market.
