Forum upgraded, problems fixed

A problem was noticed with the forum recently where no posts could be made, and the formatting was way off. Turns out it was the hosting provider - they upgraded all the daemons and services that underpin web servers, but didn't notify me of their activities. The fix was pretty simple, just had to u...

Re: How Do You Cant Your Billiard Block?

You can accomplish a canted drilling with anything from 100+ year old specialty equipment from St Claude, France, on down to a simple wood lathe chuck - with a hundred stops in between. I've always found a Oneway chuck with Tower jaws to be sufficient. I could probably benefit from making myself a s...

Looks like Orange, either with a touch of Light Brown, or garnet shellac over it.

Re: Billiard Attempt Based On Information Provided From My Last Attempt And The Comments Shared

If I may ask, could someone please explain to me how to drill the bowl so it is canted? I'm still confused on how it's done. It's really easy. When drawing the lines on the side of your block, draw the center axis of the tobacco chamber canted forward by about 1.5 degrees (or 1 degree, or whatever ...

Re: Metal lathe tooling

You probably can't go wrong with that. I will say that the knurling tool is complete garbage in my set - which I suspect is made by the same folks that made the LMS set - but once you have your lathe up and running, you can make your own with no trouble. The thing you will find you need almnost imme...

Re: Metal lathe tooling

I bought a chinesium AXA toolpost and holder set off of eBay. To my surprise, it is exceedingly good. I buy tool holders from Amazon, also chinesium and in a handful of different flavors, and they are excellent as well. If you're going QC toolpost for your lathe, those are a viable option.

Re: E32 straight shank collet

Depends on the collet block. If it doesn't have a hole straight through, you can chuck it up in the 3-jaw and make that hole.

What lathe? Tooling recommendations might be highly dependent on what you've got to start with.

Re: Customs duty/tariff charges when purchasing from suppliers

I have never been able to ship anything to Canada without the receiver having to pay customs charges - even on gifts I send to my sister and her family (QC).

Here in the US, I have never had to pay import fees, duties, tariffs, or taxes on anything I order from overseas.

Re: E32 straight shank collet

I use my ER32 collet chuck pretty much daily. It's very accurate, almost no runout, and very secure. Mine is direct thread to my spindle, but if you can get a straight shank setup in your 3-jaw, and the 3-jaw is setup well, I imagine it would be just as good. The only thing you won't have, and I don...

Re: Linden wood

Linden wood is also called basswood and its great for carving, but I think would make a poor pipe. It is very porous and light. If you can’t get briar, then olive or morta would be the other choices, followed by fruitwoods. DocAitch This. I once made a basswod (linden, lime, etc) pipe. It's trash w...

Re: Opinions on Linseed Oil.

There have been some pipe makers that have experimented with Danish Oil, including myself. It contains, among other things, linseed oil. The drawback is that it contains other, sometimes unknown, components. It all depends on the brand, and the particular recipe of the oil. I use a linseed oil mix o...

Re: YouTube just deleted 2/3 of my educational project playlists

Along the lines of George's post, some may find "The Social Dilemma" on Netflix interesting. It's nothing more than what should already be known by everyone, but it's interesting to see the folks that built social media companies actually admit to what they're doing.

All social media, including YouTube, is a lost cause IMO. You're not the customer, you are the product for sale. The customer is the advertiser and the entities who pay for access to your data.

Re: Rubio Monocoat

All I know is that linseed oil, while I like the smell during its curing phase, doesn't seem like an odor I'd like in my nose while smoking a pipe. It's a pretty distinct fragrance. Looking at the Monocoat MSDS, it indicates to keep away from hot surfaces - and no smoking. :) This obviously refers t...

Generally both - depends on the pipe. Some shapes just don't lend themselves to machine sanding.
