advise on a finish of sorts.
I make goblets from beer-bottles. Its not hard and folks love em. Only thing is; Most beer bottle labels are glued on not painted on or made into the bottle so yore restricted in design choice. So my question to the community is: can anyone think of some kind of coating that is "food grade"...

Re: GRRR!!!
well firstly, I'm using a wood lathe we'll get that out of the way. I use a combination of a flat scraper and a parting tool for the tenon. i get the taper if i don't hold the tool perfectly square. I recently figured out that if i watch the "horizon" instead of the cut I get much better r...

Thanks much guys! I ended up just shortening the stem a bit. But I'll keep those tricks in mind for next time(later today)!

Stuck Drill Bit
So last night I found out the hard way that stopping the bit in Lucite is a bad thing. I was drilling out the last of the stem when the chuck slipped. by the time I got the bit re-chucked, the lucite had cooled, trapping my bit; in my efforts to remove it I torqued off the bit flush with the stem en...
Re: Band work
aok so epoxy seems to be the most suitable method in this case. the pinning thing sounds like it would be more for a cracked band or what ev.! good ideas and thanks for the tip!
Re: GRRR!!!
ok, so, I had my tittie fit and decided complaining to strangers isn't going to fix the issue. I have a slight taper in my tenon I just cant seem to sand out and I think that's whats busting my mortise. so yeah, I guess I need more practice on the lathe
GRRR!!!
I just have to complain a little here. I carved 6 stummels today and broke every one of them! I need to be more patient with stem fitting i suppose.

Re: 2 Stem Questions.
i gust remove the center from the headstock and the point from the tail stock, round over the ends to make a slight cone and mount it like that. i just crank down the tailstock every once and awhile. I know there are better ways but it works for me. untill i get a fancy chuck anyway!

Re: wood preperation
yall poke fun all you like. I can take it. There are many pipe smokers out there who enjoy alternate materials; briar may be the best material for it but it is certainly not the only. That said, i actually do have some briar on order and look foward to working it. thanks for the answer and the wit :...
Re: Band work a little late and off topic
so now that we know how to install a band is there any way to replace a band that has fallen off without using a new band or glue?

wood preperation
alright, so I got more madrone this year and I want to boil it out like they do for briar (want to see if this will help a taste issue) and i have a couple questions: 1. Do i need any additives in my boil or will just plain water work? 2. do i boil before or after letting the wood dry out? 3. If i d...
