Jack is right. Find out what the power needs for the lathe are and what you have at home before you take it. It might end up needing some wiring or the services of an electrician. That will add up quick!

IMO, you're more likely to damage the chamber walls with a thick walled pipe since you can't feel the heat on the outside in your hand. Much more likely to smoke it too hot.

Max, you just remove 2 of the jaws and keep 2 opposing. That's all you need to grip the block.

I took the simple approach. A piece of leather on my lap, stem in the pipe, and get to it.

I do keep the calipers and a small drill bit nearby to help check progress.

Often those are turned from brass rod stock on a metal lathe.

I have had plenty of good luck with tampers made only of wood.

Outside the Comfort Zone

I'm starting to experiment a little. I think seeing Jeff Gracik's pipes in person gave me some inspiration. So I thought I'd give some of those "creases" a go. Here's my latest run. In this case, the crease serves to delineate between the straight grain on the side and the birdseye on the ...

Messages like that crop up from time to time. Always someone looking for a handout. You'd think they must be successful now and again if they keep at it. I usually respond and tell the person that if they'd like one of my pipes, then they'll have to pay for it as I am a starving artist and can't aff...

You know, I have and use 3 lathes!

A Jet 9x20 for stummels.

A Jet midi type lathe as a sanding station mostly.

A little Taig metal lathe for stem work. I'd like to replace the Taig with a bigger metal lathe, but can't afford it right now.

Ckr has the idea. I don't think this was to reinforce the tenon as it is pretty beefy at .40. And it went deeper than that. I'll try another description. Pick up a stem. Now drill a countersink into the tenon that extends past it another 1/2 of an inch. Thread in a 1/2 long piece of brass rod. Then ...

Stem Plumbing

A pipe (the maker will remain nameless) showed up in the mail today. Didn't pick it up until I got home from the show. Anyway, the airway in the stem was about 1/8 of an inch, if that. So I went to drill it out. Drill bit got in part way and brass shavings started coming out . It got worse. A...

Never saw Black Flag, but I did see the Clash, DK, Ramones, 7 Seconds, Minor Threat, and several other 80's punk bands. We had a good scene in DC.

Anyway, Kurt, it's sometimes the simple things, it's almost always!

Kurt, not to hijack your thread or anything :? (great looking knife by the way), someone mentioned briar scales for the handle.

Well, I tried making some briar pistol grips for my revolver. Liked them so much I've set up shop and am now making them for sale. http://www.jsgrips.com

I'm using a CA glue similar to the one that was posted above. It's supposed to be flexible and for gluing plastics. They carry it at a local woodworking shop here. Go figure? Anyway, I've used it to glue delrin into briar, lucite, and acrylic. Haven't had a single failure. What I don't use it for is...
