Re: Smithy 3 in1

I have one that I have had about 10 years. HATE IT! Would reccomend it as a good boat anchor. It is like some thing you buy at Harbor Freight. It is of no use for turning tenons but works just fine for bowl turning. I gave up on the mill function because I can not stop the chuck from falling off. If...

Re: ropp pipes

Many years ago we sold a lot of Ropp cherry wood pipes. In the last few years I sold a bunch of briar pipes that were quite nice with that brand on them. They were exactly the same pipes as are available with the Chacom label. Quite often a company will use two or more labels if they want to sell th...

Re: Acrylic Churchwarden Stems without deep-hole drilling

A former employe of mind wanted a acrylic stem for one of his better pipes a few years ago. I do not do repairs but decided to try it as a favor to him. I came up with a OUT OF THE BOX plan as well. I chucked up a 9 inch rod in my lathe and drilled a hole through it. I just made it the same as any o...

Re: ovalish stem and shank

I take a cheap molded stem with the oval I am after and turn it to fit the shank. I then simply match the shank to the stem. Next I make a hand made stem and match it to the shank.

Re: Selecting a lathe- help

This lathe choosing thing is not easy. I have a American made antique lathe that works well but even though it is reconditioned is still a tad sloppy. I have been using it for at least 13 years. After using it for about 2 years I wanted to try something not so old. I made a mistake of buying a Smith...

Re: lane stokkebye shakeup

They can say what ever they want about how they will not change any thing just improve availability but, it has been my experience that some of the blends will fall by the wayside. Lane dropped all but the best sellers of their own blends a few years back. We sell a lot of the deluxe blends in the b...

Re: lane stokkebye shakeup

At my store, The Briary, we did our annual show on February 4th. This marked the first time in quite a while that Erik Stokkeby did not attend. He did send our sales rep, Mike Schaefer. Even though it was suposed to be old news about The Stokkebye company no longer selling the products with their na...

Re: Looking at a Cratsman Lathe

It was a nice looking metal lathe with a very professional looking table for it to sit on. Had a lot of neat features. I got ready to call him today and decided to check my e-mail. It was sold. No big problem since my 1890 lathe is still working. I thought I would modernize by moving up to a 1930-19...

Looking at a Cratsman Lathe

Hi,
I am thinking about a Craftsman Lathe that is near by and on Craigs list. They are asking 600.00 "restored". It looks good. What do you guys think about it for the price? The posting ID is 2836443909 if you want to take a look.

Thanks,

Pipe Show at The Briary

We are having our annual pipe show on Saturday February 4th. This year the pipe maker will be Erik Nording. Erik will be autographing pipes as well as boxes of his cigars. He is a real character and fun to hang out with. We will also have the people from Villiger Stokkeby sporting their bacca. We ar...

Re: Anyone buy from this guy?

I prefer to not have my briar sanded for inspection. If it is inspected I feel that due to my small orders, I will get what they do not want to send to larger customers. The first batch from Romeo was not sanded and I got awesome wood. The second batch came in sanded and was mediocer at best. I will...

Re: Group Ebonite buy

I want to go on record and say that I in no way blame Kurt for how this went down. I was in the last buy. The black rods I got were so soft that they have no use for stem making. None of the colored rods were the colors I asked for and no matter what they looked like on the surface they were that ic...

I have two overhead fans in my garage. This is enough for me most of the time BUT lately it has been too hot and humid. I was forced to turn on the ac. It has not been turned on in years.

Check out all the stain in the brake. The wood was too soft there and would have broken whether you stamped it or not.
Still sucks though.

Lucky day

A guy accross the street got a new job and moved leaving some interesting things behind. They had a estate sale today and I grabbed three nice tools. The first was a small Craftsman table saw that was seriously vintage. It had a external motor and was in great shape. It works like new. The next thin...

Re: Bakelite on eBay - a word of warning

Several years back I went to Stone Mountain Ga to look over the inventory of J. H. Lowe. They were selling as much as they could and what they could not sell was going to be bought in a lump by Tim West. You guys would not believe how much stuff was there. It was all neatly organized on shelves in a...
