Re: Wood Dye Source

Rad's amassed quite a collection. He's waiting until he's really ready to release his work to the world. All the rogue Davis' we see out there are either made by that other Davis hack  or were stolen from Rad's workshop.

One day, though, Rad. You're really getting there. ;)

Sandblasting--New Video Blog

Hello everyone, I wanted to let you all know that I've just added a new video episode to my blog. The episode talks about and demonstrates the sandblasting process. You get to see two pipes go through the blasting stages from start to completed pipe. I hope that you all find it informative and enter...

1. Finish stem completely. 2. Heat and bend with heat gun. 3. Lightly buff with white diamond 4. Sell pipe. 5. Make another pipe. Or, with slight variation: 1. Sell pipe 2. Finish stem completely. 3. Heat and bend with alcohol burner. 4. Lightly buff with white diamond 5. Make another pipe. :D TJ x...

Re: Stem Slotting Tools -- New video blog entry

Hey Daniel, The point of this video, as I wrote in its description--though didn't clarify in the audio--was as a basic introduction. I didn't show photos of the individual files for several reasons. Primarily, I forgot until after filming and editing. :) Secondarily, the video, as a basic introducti...

Re: How BAD does it have to be?

Gunner, Rusticate it. If you can't blast it (have you checked into renting time on a blasting unit? Sometimes this is possible) then rusticate it. But NEVER sell such a pipe with a flaw in it if you want to develop a solid reputation in the future. I have only ever considered finishing pipes smooth ...

Nice work! All three of the pipes are nicely shaped and have outstanding grain. The immediate areas in need of improvement are on the shanks. You'll notice "breaks" in the line that you're running from the front of the bowl back to the end of the shank. This should "flow" and you...

Well, this may be reflective of the quality of preformed stems that I've used, I have to disagree about the comfort that can be achieved with preformed. If we're only talking shape, then sure it is possible. However, I find that the vulcanite used in preformed stems is inferior in strength and flexi...

FWIW, Mike, most of us who have done this for a while have used stock from both companies, if not from others as well. I've used Hamburg, SEM, vintage stock that has a density similar to the Guidicis you mentioned, molded stems of various origins and ages, as well as a bunch of stems I've modified o...

Or wine corks. Synthetic wine corks are much more fun to acquire and can be shaped to size if smaller ones are needed. :)

Hey folks,

I just posted a new video discussing some of the tools that I use in stem making. The tools I talk about are specifically for use in cutting and finishing the slot in a stem. You can all see the video here.
