Re: Laser engravers

I have an American made Epilog. Expensive? yes Worth it? It depends on what you are going to do with it. If all you are going to do is mark a logo on pipes then go the Chicom route. There are some of those that are pretty good if the sales are set up similar to how Precision-Matthews does its lathes...

Although Mr. Johnson et al like to keep things super duper black ops secret squirrel, I have a suspicion that Briarworks uses something similar to this: https://youtu.be/nVMmb1u6rt8 I agree with your suspicion. Serious money at work with this one. Making the 3D model is a big chunk of the battle. I...

BTW, George does all of this stuff in his living room. Don't need no fancy shop!
Or maybe it's his dining room.

I bought some of my very first briar from Mark many years ago. I still have a couple of pieces.

Re: Help me build a new shop.

It would be a lot easier to see the shop without all of your ugly mugs in the way! I'm sorry I missed it. Todd Tyler's house has a three car garage. He made the single his shop. Sitting height work surface extends from the doorway around to Steve's left shoulder. Also at that point is the all-impor...

Re: 2 jaw chuck problem question

We're doing pipe making here, we don't need super fancy chucks. Chinese or Indian made are perfectly good enough for the work we do. I have some really nice chucks, proper British made stuff, they are not much more accurate than the new Chinese made stuff. A 3 jaw isn't a precision tool no matter w...

Re: 2 jaw chuck problem question

Both my Oneway Chucks have slop, in fact one is 10 thousands off center and the other is 20, and stopped using it because of it. There made for wood turners and not for precision work needed when drilling a mortise or turning tenons and that's why there only $199. $199 strikes me as very expensive ...

Re: Flaws driving me nuts!

Like everyone says, part of the game. Mother Nature can be cruel. If the flaws aren't ridiculous try rustication. That will fix a lot of sins. Numerous posts here on how to make a rustication tool. Like Jeremiah said, buying better briar will help but I've seen nasty flaws in the best. Watch out for...

Re: A Counterbore And Endmill Question

End mills and Forstner bits just complicate things, imo. Unless using a high quality machine lathe AND high precision tools at EVERY link in the chain, each step adds slop. Here's a simple method that does away with all that: -- Drill mortise & ream w/chucking reamer -- Chuck whatever pin gauge...
