Repair referral...
I haven’t been active on this forum for a number of years, and have personally taken a hiatus from pipe making in general otherwise I would attempt this myself: A friend of mine has five or six pipes with broken/worn out stems he needs repaired and I told him I’d ask this forum for referrals for som...

Thanks!
I find more pleasure in making off the wall pipes versus the traditional designs, and since most of you do a way better job at those I figured I'd find my niche in the fringe.
Cheers!

The Big Five of Africa
This is the craziest project I've completed so far, although an AR-15 ( http://pipesbydesign.com/ar15 ) pipe is right up there. This is the Big Five animals of Africa, which are allegedly the most dangerous to hunt since they're more likely to hunt you than the other way around. A full gallery is up...

Re: dust collection
I'll say it again, and risk sounding annoying (not really worried about that since I'm fully convinced by this guy), but you need to read through Pentz's website and seriously consider what he is saying. I believe he provides compelling discussion about what the actual dangers are with dust, what is...

Tool rest on metal lathe...
Thinking of wood turning here. What do you guys do who don't have wood lathes and do all your work on your metal lathes? I feel like I'm probably going to have to make something that will clamp onto the bed of my Logan 820. I'm not interested in having a whole lot of mobility on this thing since mos...

Re: Foredom questions/recommendations?
I've got a dremel with the flexible shaft and I am ready to move on. The only thing I use it for is to cut the slit on the mouthpiece a la Kurt's tutorial. I am consistently annoyed because regardless of the efforts I've taken to remove all play there is a bit of wobble, and the cheap dremel collet ...

Re: dust collection
You need to look up the name Bill Pentz and seriously consider what he's got to say regarding the hazards associated with dust exposure and his proposed solution. If he's wrong... then you'll have the cleanest shop around. If he's right... then you'll save yourself from some serious health problems....

Re: Self centering or Indpendent Chuck
Voted self centering since pipemaking doesn't need ultra precision that people claim you can achieve with independent jaws.

Re: Logan 820...
I'm buying the logan manual so I'll use that for lube points and such. As for why he was selling, I mentioned he had a dream shop and I meant it. He had a beautiful LeBlonde that he had restored that was so smooth it was like machining silk, and he had a Monarch that wasn't as pretty but was equally...

Re: Logan 820...
I took a shot of the gears because I was impressed with how perfect and clean they were. This thing is heavy heavy heavy. I have no idea how I single-handedly unloaded it from my truck, moved it 15 feet to where it is now, and put it back together (had taken legs off)... and managed to not hurt myse...

Logan 820...
Had to drive a total of 6 hours, but I just brought home a Logan 820. It's perfect. Virtually no wear on the ways, very clean, etc. The guy's shop was one of those ones you dream about having if money wasn't an issue. Huge. Massive machines lined up with every kind of tool available neatly within ar...

Re: Hardinge lathe...
I see your point regarding mass production. Not necessariliy something I am looking to get into at the moment... Read this on lathes.co.uk... "As this lathe was capable of prolonged, very hard use, most have been worked to death. A little-used example such as this is now very rare." Kind o...

Hardinge lathe...
...anyone have one? I see them once in a while on CL and they're kind of weird looking. The turret they seem to usually come with is intriguing for pipemaking, but I don't know enough about lathes to make a move on one since they're out of the ordinary looking...

Re: I knew but now I don't...
I don't know that the 9 has sold yet. If it has I won't weep over it, although I think if I can get ahold of the seller (left a message) and it is in good shape in person then I'll probably go for it. I'm just hoping it hasn't sold in the few hours it was posted before I saw it. That would just fry ...

I knew but now I don't...
Well, in my recent thread about outgrowing a lathe Todd had some good advice that I often see repeated...buy bigger if you can. Now I'm torn between a bigger lathe and a lathe with a lot more tooling. Both South Bend lathes. One is a heavy 10, the other is a 9A. Both with the cabinet. Both appear to...
