Using two lights, which is pretty much the standard setup, you can easily make a switch, w/ a double-pole/double throw switch, to change from running your lamps in series (for setting up and checking your lighting) to parallel (for actual shooting). Keeps the lamps real cool, saves electricity, incr...

Tano, Unfortunately, the only family tree I have on hand focuses on my mother's side. All the names on it bring to mind things like lutefisk and people walking around in deep snow saying "Oofta" and "Ya, vel og!" I do like the second pipe above -- the rustication, the shape, the ...

I thank you all. (Aaron, I should have remembered your post of some months ago, but that's what happens to old people, I guess. Partly the fault of the computer, however; you fall into the habit of letting the PC remember things for you . . . and then forget what you were trusting to the computer's ...

. . . or, if not a disaster, at least a mild nightmare of sorts. But perhaps it's something we can chalk up as "a good learning experience"; it makes you think. And sometimes use bad words.

So John, from now on leave the blindfold tests to the TV commercials, eh. Ditto what I said over on Knox; it's cathartic to view the images again and again over here! And right on about the light stain! Just a super pipe!

Kurt et al, if I may add a querry here. . . . A couple months ago, Ronny posted a pretty good how-to on contrast staining; he mentioned that, for the primary stain he does use a good alcohol-based dye, but for the light contrast stain, he uses an oil-base stain to keep it from being affected by the ...

Tyler, it's nice to know the instruction films are still there for the next bunch of pipemakers. Gosh --- a little stability in this hectic age; who'd a thunk it?

Hmm. . . Twenty-some views; three votes: you deserve better. But all three of us "action" guys say it's a "Prince." Maybe a little thick in the stem, but very definitely a lovely pipe. And for #6, as has been said, that's better'n my sixth, which hasn't even been made yet.

Now that, Ronny, is one lovely job! Trying to find words (and I'm good with 'em) for what I feel, I come up with this: it flows together -- the shape, the rustication, the stain. Such a fine, balanced effort! Gosh but that's a nice pipe!

Rad, check out "Drawing from the Right Side of Your Brain" (or was it Left? It's been so many years I can't remember. Doesn't matter, really). Anyway, it's a basically primer on how to see and execute what's in your head. Also, it's largely practice, like any other skill.

That said, however, Butch, I have to admit that I kind-a like the military style, too. Seems t'me, though, that the taper must vary according to the diameter of the join. (I recall reading that somewhere --- maybe in my old green "Machinist's Handbook" back when Hector was a pup.) If so, w...

An amazingly homogenous bunch! Quite similar in a multitude of talents and interests, very good with words. . . . Surprised that my long-ago pet, used as part of my master's, the right-brain/left-brain concept didn't find its way into the discussion. We "recognize" on a non-verbal, almost ...

Very very pretty. I like the short stem; makes a very ellegant pipe into an informal, chummy smoke (if that makes any sense).
