Scott, first of all, it's a lovely pipe! Personally, I don't think the ring's too big . . . but for some reason it looks like the diameter is slightly less than the shank and insert. The bit -- perhaps only because it's darker than the briar -- looks slightly larger than the insert. Optical illusion...

Tano, somewhere on this board is a link to a video showing how Talbert drills after shaping --- chucking the drill in the lathe and, if memory serves, using a dab of hardened epoxy (?) as an anchor for a pin between the end-stock chuck and the stummel; left hand steadies and guides the pipe while th...

Heinz, I only know it's tricky stuff. Carbon arrow shafts must be cut on a special high-speed cutter. . . .

Tano, that's gorgeous! Really fine. As for you question to Kurt, I don't know, but what a lot of people would use is Florist's Clay (or florist's gum) which is kinda sticky but wipes off nicely. Great stuff for photography use.

Hey, Hogi. Yup, that's better. Next time a little closer. And now that we can see it (I know, since you were making a repair that there couldn't have been a preconceived plan, but) do you see how nice a little more flare on the extension (gently increasing from the shank but stopping short of being ...

Experience? Moi? Mais non! I just got old without experiencing nothin'! I'm just guessing, now, and someone who actualy knows will step in with a yea or a nay, I hope, but I'd guess a good, pretty fine-toothed mill bastard is the way to go. But you'll note that PIMO isn't filing with the stem IN the...

Well, Tom Sawyer would have been proud to smoke the top ones, I bet. But the one from dried cherry is a really nice-looking pipe. Extension and all. (For photos, you might try Heinz's dodge and shoot 'em outside in the sunlight. Should stop down the lens for you and give a little more depth of field.)

But, unless you're really stocking up, have you tried your local auto-parts store? It took me a while to figure out that they'll have sandpaper as fine as you could wish for finish-work on paint jobs.

Re: Pipe #4 - Straight Billard- Hand Cut Stem

The stem was handcut from black/blue lucite and the briar was a ebauchon. As you can probably see, the button gave me fits and I ended up sanding away more material than I intended. Hi, Jamie. I think there's probably a reason PIMO's book shows a stem being filed . . . and --- was it our host? --- ...

I'm sorry, Hogi; this happens here, sometimes. Somebody posts, and everyone seems to be busy that night or next day, takes a glance and says to himself, I'll come back to this one when I can spend some time instead of writing something meaningless. And next time, the little icon isn't lit up so show...

So why not a Dremel w/ felt wheel and/or cone for those hard-to-reach spots? Gentle and slow-speed should be OK, no?

Whoa, hoss! That's a BIG fella, b'gosh. But in the second side view I can see the shape you're going for. At least, I hope so. And then in the vertical shot, if the nose of the horse is as I surmise toward the bit, you want to narrow the nose some to make the horse's head more obvious. But then, I c...

To keep it simple for those scanning the thread: "Tung oil, Tung is a tree found in China and Africa and some South American countries. "Linseed oil is extracted from the seeds of the flax plant by steaming and crushing them. Raw linseed oil is boiled to remove impurities and helps to make...

Heinz, Yes, I've been noodling at the back of my brain that problem of how to avoid staining the extension . . . and haven't come up with anything yet. Maybe someone who knows will step in with a revelation. But the stain job on the briar's very nice, I think. Danish oil -- is that what we call tung...

Bill, see Scott's "Etude #9" (I think it was) and the advice on filing the stem; it looks like you could use both a little thinning toward the button and a more pronounced button for a secure grip. And you know, you can still sand this boy and re-finish it to get more taper on the stem and...

You know, Mark, it kinda grows on a person. I still like the squiggly best, but the stem-to-stummel on this one is pretty neat.
