Re: Looking for cracked blocks

Yup! You'll definately get plenty of cracked ones from Juan. I drilled number 5 of 10 last night. Four have been cracked or heavily pitted.

Re: Ballerina

Over all I like it. The only thing that is sticking out to me is the curves from shank to stem don't seem to match. Maybe too much angle on the mortise?

Everything else is beautiful to me.

Re: Any ideas on the maker

I agree, it is a POS. That's part of the reason of why I'm asking. The pipe belongs to one of my uncles. My current mission pipe-wise is to make him a good pipe to replace it.

Re: Are we allowed to say "damnit" in here?

JeremyV: Have you tried a pothole patch? That pit is big! I feel bad for you. My first piece of briar had a big pit inside the bowl and a bunch of small pits around the outside of the bowl, but that blows all my pits away! :( Nah, I put a stem from another pipe on it and smoked it a couple times, b...

Re: Your block preparation suggestions...

I don't have my briar chuck finished yet, so I've been drilling on a press. I square up on a table saw and then chuck it up in one of these little chingaderas. http://www.harborfreight.com/5-inch-drill-press-milling-vise-94276.html I mark my block up on all sides and then make sure I chuck it square...

Re: Third Pipe - Criticism Appreciated

Looks pretty good, but I will offer a couple of points of critique. I too have been making the few pipes I've made so far by hand. In order to get the rim of the bowl as even as possible, I've been marking them with a compass, grind/sand to that line, then work from the top down. I think it may have...

True, but with a little finesse on an 1800 rpm baldor, I had no trouble.

Why not just give it a bump on the buffing wheel with some 1200 compound?

Re: damn its hot!

I spent last week moving. There was one afternoon when I started getting light headed and tunnel visioned. And I'm not talkin' about drinkin' whiskey or focusing on my work. I HAD to take a break. I'm starting to think that the earth is falling off of it's axis. Our summers and winters are starting ...

Very nice! I agree with Kurt's comment about the curve though. I'd consider heating closer to the stummel first and get a longer, but more gentle bend going vs all of it being on the rear 1/3.

Damn you Boekweg! My wife and kids just got there yesterday afternoon (Green River) and called just to say it was 79 degrees. It was still 105 on my front porch at 8:30 last night.

Where in Wyoming are ya?

Re: Hand Fatigue

If it's so bad that you're having to stop for prolonged periods of time, it may be just your general health. You don't have to be old to get arthritis, you just have to be missing the nutrients that allow it to set in. You may consider taking calcium, potassium (not more than 100mg/day) and B vitami...

Too bad you weren't recording a "how to" video when that happened. You could have gotten rich on youtube with that one.
