Good to see you posting, Frank. I'm curious. Are you still making pipes? I always enjoyed your work. Good to see you again, Frank! :D And looking forward to more posts from you. Sorry for the delayed reply. I don't seem to be getting email notifications to the post even though I have the "Noti...

Jet Black Finish
Since I haven't been on the site for a number of years, I'm not sure if this problem was ever resolved. The problem and discussion was that commercial black stains end up having a bluish tinge to the finish rather than the desired jet black finish. I was just watching a short TV documentary on cabin...

You have to roast them on an open fire, around Christmas time.RadDavis wrote:Wayne, as hard as tagua nuts are, I'm surprised you get any taste at all out of them.wdteipen wrote: The time wasted has left a bad taste in my mouth for tagua nut.

It's really not "natural" as part of a pipe.

Re: Lathe Mandrels
It depends on how much you're prepared to pay. This extension seems a bit pricey to me (but I'm a known cheapskate), but if you know someone with a metal lathe, they could make one for less: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/250933591723?lpid=82 The Oversized Ostrogoth used to like making lathe accessori...

I Agree. It looks like it has nice grain, try a contrast.Sasquatch wrote:Contrast stain, see what it looks like. If you hate it, then blast it. I'd try to save it as a smooth.

True. They usually have a small, natural void in the centre, plus the germination wotsis, so you end up with a lot of waste, but it can be done.RadDavis wrote:The trouble with tagua nut is finding a big enough piece to work with.![]()

Re: I need your opinion and criticisms...
Please be gentle. Actually, you don't want the critiques to be gentle. You want all the flaws pointed out - that's how you learn to get better at it. The critics here can be brutally honest, but never rude. The rude ones are soon told to GTFO! I will leave others better qualified to point out other...

Re: Well, goodbye pre-ban ivory
Hiya Andrew. Yes, I pop in on the rare occasion when I get a notification on an old thread I'm still subscribed to. It's nice and white, somewhat translucent, but it would never pass for ivory. It's a good, but altogether different material. I've got some prepped on my work bench that I'll use event...

Use Tagua nut, it's relatively inexpensive. It looks, feels and works just like ivory. It even colour ages like ivory over time. http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2085406/39828/Tagua-Nuts-5-piece.aspx?keyword=&refcode=10INGOPB&device=c&network=g&matchtype=&gclid=CP6l5KqujL0CFYZafg...

Re: Ebony finish
I saw on a woodworking program on TV awhile back how they achieved a 'faux' ebony finish - they used India Ink. In theory it should give a true black finish as opposed to the greenish/blue tinge you get from Fiebings black. I've been meaning to experiment with it on some old basket pipes, but haven'...

Re: Turning Cured Tobacco into a Respectable Aromatic (Pics)
Hello, I am Robert. I like aromatics, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. :D Same here! I don't like aromatics because I end up with my tongue fried. How's the bite in this tobacco? I think tongue-bite has more to do with the tobacco than the aromatics. I smoke 'Butternut Burley' exclusively and it ne...

Re: Making Knives in Mexico
Very nice work there Robert. I have to echo the sentiment, you're doing yourself a disservice by setting your prices so low even if the cost of living down there is much lower. At a bare minimum you should double that starting price. I hope you're using some sort of face mask when grinding. My lungs...
