Re: Help! Stem has a gap:-(
It's also possible that you've cut the shank face and/or the stem shoulder at an angle all the way around, instead of them being perpindicular to the centre axis.
Looking at the new photos you added, there's a raised area on the stem face, around the tenon, by the looks of things.

Could be the lighting, but something looks weird about the underside of the stem, the area closest to the button. The bite looks pretty thick, too. Other than that you're well on your way, considering it's your first. Good job.

No problem - I'll have a word with him tonight. So, just go on in to work and light up indoors. No worries.restever99 wrote:I wonder if I could convince my boss to let me smoke at work.

Yep. Many of my pipes are Oom Pauls, so I get 3 to 4 lights from a bowlful.pierredekat wrote:A third way would be to set the pipe aside, half-smoked, and finish the other half later.

Reminds of the old guy who owned the fisrt machine shop I worked in. He didn't like new-fangled dial indicators with jeweled movements becasue they were too fragile. "Hit 'em with a hammer or drop the damn things and they're no good any more". I just got a mental picture of him goin...

Re: Ebonite rod source
I'm wondering where most people are getting their ebonite. I've seen the posts about group orders from SEM and whatnot; does that sort of thing still happen? I've only ordered from PME and I was very happy with the product and service, I'm just wondering if I'm missing out on something price-wise. ...

I wouldn't say anything bad about Trent's stuff, but I saw one of his chucks at Premal's and I think the chuck jaws Mark made are better. .... Jack Well, I think you just did. Perhaps you're being a bit too critical of Jack's remark. Pointing out features that make one item better than another does...

One advantage of Trent's chuck is that it incorporates the "locating pins". In theory, this allows you to perfectly align the tobacco chamber and draught hole when you drill them.SimeonTurner wrote:Would you say these are better/worse/the same as Trent Rudat's chucks?

This doesn't actually apply to pipemaking, but since there are a few knifemakers and machinists that haunt the forum, I might get an answer: Until recently I used 1,1,1-Trichloroethane (Carbo-Trichlor) for degreasing metal. I preferred using it because it very effectively removed oil and grease, eva...

I am in need of one of these, but I can find no one around here that will make one. Any ideas? If you have an industrial area near you, there will likely be machine shops that can make it for you.
