Re: Cyclone Cabinet Question

I use my main dust collector, this may or may not work for your cabinet. Do you use something before the collector to catch the media? I'm thinking for recycle purposes. Yes I have a cyclone but I don't really recycle much, most of the time the good stuff falls into the hopper and the DE just takes...

It doesn't come up often, but the bark issue is important. Bark can hide imperfections fatal to a pipe. We are not trying to insult you. The goal of the forum is to help carvers make better pipes (and avoid pitfalls). Unless otherwise stated we will critque new work so the carver can improve. Everyt...

It's not hard to move ports around, but if you are not confident that you know what you're doing, just run some extra hose.

Re: No.10 Pipe for Critique

What the hell is going on in the forums these days? Well, seems to me that folks are posting up their work on the other pipe forums and getting all the "oohs and aahs" and "that's the best thing since sliced bread" that is common and default for pretty much any pipe posted in th...

Re: replacing entire shank

Part of the danger in getting too close to the chamber is possible loosening of the stainless tenon due to heat breakdown of the epoxy. You can run the stainless right up to the chamber, but you risk longer term failure in the joint. Make sure you abrade the stainless tubing.

Re: My First Commission, Pipe #10

Also, I would not advise creating a "brand" for a couple years. It won't do anything for you now. The only legitimate reason for creating a "name" at this point would be if you are actually running a business and need it for tax purposes. Even then.... One thing I do regret was s...

Re: My First Commission, Pipe #10

So, I agree with you guys that the pipe needs improvement. That said.... Click, If it's a choice between not making pipes or selling one that is "mechannically ok" and taking the money and buying more supplies... sell the pipe. Recoup your material costs and move on. I sold pipes starting ...

As long as you can ream it when you're done. You will be better off if you don't have much if any contact between the stem and shank extension. Let the mortise in the briar take the torque.

Re: Shape of the dust extractor intake?

Premal is right. I went for three years with a shop vac. My shop was always full of dust. It never quite did the job. I spent about $250 and bought a real dust collector (that included odds and ends too). Less suction pressure, but way more volume than a shop vac. Much better for dust.

The dust was from before I had the hood. I'll use a lower resolution image next time ;)

The dust on the lamp is from hand sanding right next to the lamp.

Re: brass on shank

I typically only use a half saddle if there is a line on the underside/top of the pipe I'm desperate to preserve. Other than that, I'd say most are clunky and look like they should be on a diet.
