Re: Fourth billiard

Not quite ready to jump back in yet, but kids are getting older. I’ve got another few years of kids at home and things may change. Trying to make sure I spend my time wisely :)

Glad to see you guys are still keeping some of the crew on the straight and narrow.

Re: Fourth billiard

Depends on a whole lot of things with horn. It’s a complicated material to work with. Working it also smells like burning Sasquatch hair on a hot august afternoon. But seriously, the age, animal type, overall quality... it’s finicky... but also amazing to get right. My favorite part of a cow other t...

Pipe Tooling For Sale

UPDATE - TOOLING HAS BEEN SPOKEN FOR. Thank you for looking. I'm selling my pipe tooling. Mildly disconcerted about it, but I need to focus completely on family and work for the next decade or so. I have a laundry list of stuff I'm selling so just let me know what you guys might be interested in: **...

Re: stem shank junction pissing me off

If the pipe was wet the next day... you're either soaking it and/or your work area is really humid. Wet sanding is fine, but it presents its own challenges that must be overcome. Be very careful how much moisture gets to the stem/shank junction.

Re: shaping disk has wobble

I made my backing disk from aircraft aluminum. I just use a washer and spray adhesive to keep my sanding disk/wood chipper in place. Don't have to flatten the disk. 1/8" sheet doesn't even know the disk is adhered to it.

A mt1 reamer is about 1.43 deg. The total included angle is about 2.86 deg.

Re: Disc Sander

I second the dust collection comment. I toughed it out. It was a bad idea. Just buy one arbor that will thread on to the shaft. Then you can use 3/8" coarse thread for your attachments.

Re: #10 new finish. Tell me what you think

The finish looks very nice. The only caution I would offer is to make sure it stands up to heat and wear. Without knowing what you put on in what order I can't tell you how durable it will be. Finishes (in my opinion) are critical to an excellent pipe... like the little puppy Tripod's remaining thre...

Re: Importance of Shellac ??

Premal is correct. It can be used various ways. You will have to experiment with it to see what kind of finish you want. Very flexible finish product. Lots of possibilities.

With a 2lb cut expect to put on 3 layers min, smoothing between layers. The better your sending job, the less shellac you need.

Re: Importance of Shellac ??

The HD and Lowes sell "shellac". The stuff they sell has presevatives and some other tasty things that I'm not particularly fond of. I usually recommend that unless you will only coat blast work with it, mix your own. The stuff from the store is generally a 3lb cut. A little thick for pipe...

Re: Problem at the final stages

I've found waxing stems to be an important step in stem preservation. It appears to stay on the stem much longer than assumed. It may dull, but it's still there. Leanred that this last summer on the coast ;). The part of the stem that makes lip contact (larger area than the bite zone) had the wax wo...
