Re: Buying Estates
Antique shops. I find pipes almost every time I go in one. Most aren't worth anything there, but I have found a few gems. You gotta look in the nooks and crannies though to find them. It's like an Easter egg hunt!

Re: reworking previous pipes
I try and take the advice from one pipe and move on to the next. I don't like going back, and do like looking at the progress like Ernie said. rev I'll second this. When I was getting started, I needed to keep a forward momentum. I was trying to build muscle memory and eye memory I guess. I needed ...

Re: Rate my block
I used to just pick up any block I had and try to make a pipe out of it. Now that I'm paying more attention to reading the grain of the block, and finding the pipe to fit the grain well, I wouldn't know where to start with that one.

It's a good idea, but I know that if I were to set this up, people like RAD would laugh at me.

Re: asymmetrical volcano
I can't add any new critique, so I'll just tell ya what I like about it. The stain contrast is nice, very pretty on the birdseye. I like the saddle stem and overall shape of the pipe. Your take on the volcano gives me a little more hope for the shape actually. It's not one I care for too much, but I...

I'm not sure I can tell you what to do better, but I can say that I get decent pics with my point and shoot Canon Powershot Elph. I too set it to "dummy" mode and let it pick what's best. I use a light tent and make sure I have plenty of ambient light. I don't let the camera use the flash....

Re: "We've got a Piper down!!!"
Final Update! I got my machine up and running again. The culprit was the "magnetic contactor". Here's some information for any of you who may run into the same issue: Contactor part number: 3TF31 Price via Jet: $100 +/_ Price via google...potentially much cheaper. I found what appeared to ...

Re: "We've got a Piper down!!!"
Bypass the integral switch and use some Romex to hardwire it. You can use a standard light switch in an electrical box in between. Any marginally competent electrician should be able to do this for about $50. Once you have some breathing room, diagnose the problem and fix it with factory replacemen...

Re: "We've got a Piper down!!!"
UPDATE #2. I'm putting these updates in place in case others run in to the same problem. The pretty new green switch didn't fix the problem. I called Marry again (who is very helpful) and she came to the conclusion that if it wasn't the power switch, it must be the next switch in line. I'll have a n...

Re: "We've got a Piper down!!!"
UPDATE TO MY UPDATE: This did not fix my problem. It only gave me a shiny new switch. Keep reading through the thread for the actual fix. UPDATE Thanks to Ernie and his stellar help, I've got a new switch on it's way, and still under my 2 year warranty. So, in an effort to pay it forward to someone ...

Re: "We've got a Piper down!!!"
By the way, be sure you unplug your unit when dealing with this. I'm a confirmed moron, and I shocked myself pretty bad on this little project. Yeah, that would be me too. I'm pretty sure I'd remember to unplug it before replacing the switch, but I've already had it all opened up and fiddling with ...

Re: "We've got a Piper down!!!"
I don't know how to fix your problem, but if it doesn't hurt to run the lathe in this fashion, DUCT TAPE! I think this is going to have to be my solution for a while. I've got a call into the distributor. I'm not sure what the warranty is on it, but I'm not too hopeful that anything good will come ...

Re: "We've got a Piper down!!!"
On cell phone sorry short. Try this order: Release red button Put in f or r Push green button I do like above and never touch f\r switch when running. On my 920 these magnetic switches. Man, I was really hoping that would work. I just went out and tried that. It only works if I hold the power butto...

"We've got a Piper down!!!"
Well, right in the middle of a furious attempt to get some pipes ready for the Kansas City show, my lathe, which is under 2 years old, died on me. This particular model has a emergency "stop" button (red) and an "Power" button (green). I'm NO electrician, but it seems the fault i...

Re: Nording: Finish or not to finish?
I agree with the fact that it's your pipe and you should do what you want with it. I'll add a few thoughts though. I've got a Ben Wade freehand that is fairly old and "may" someday be worth something. I never smoke the pipe anymore because it gurgles something fierce. I know I could go in ...

Re: What about the pipe?
Charl, I've noticed this too. A lot of times it seems to come from the newer makers, from what I can tell. I'm a newer maker, so I watch closely to what my peers are doing. I'm sure there are several ways to look at this. I don't think there is a right or wrong to most of it, but for me if you ship ...
