Bob Flexner's book "Understanding Wood Finishes" is a worthwhile resource. I would expect that you can order it there in China. If not, I could figure out how to send it over there for you. Fantastic book! You will save yourself a lifetime of experimenting by simply reading through the re...

Re: Anone have the J.T. Cooke pipe making DVD?
Back when I started this thread the Cooke DVD was unusual. These days it's possible to find lots of great videos if you search the archives here, or just checking out various pipe maker websites and youtube. Chris Askwith has some great videos on his youtube channel, for instance: https://www.youtub...

Re: Show me your work shop
by chance are you a home brewer as well? Yes, are you? Been playing with it for two years. So far I'm just doing extract and partial mash batches, but have a wonderful time with it, and all but the first batch have been drinkable. A few batches have been really good! To improve repeatability I need...

Wish you were able to have the dust collector and air compressor somewhere else! Can you hear me? Bruce? Is that you? Hang on, let me shut off the compressor and dust collector. There we go... I've thought about trying to build a shed for them, but the only spot outside is also the best place to gr...

Workshop photos are great! Not as fun as visiting workshops in person, but either way it's great to see how someone has solved the various challenges. I'm pretty happy with mine these days, but I still discover ways to improve it. Here is a link to my workshop tour page: http://www.sethilepipes.com/...

Beautiful pipe, Sas, and a fine tribute to Kuwahara-san. Very sad he will never see it and know he inspired it, but he did, and that's a testimony to a life well lived, even though it was way too short! Cool George dug up that thesis... Always fun to see a little back story on the characters in our ...

I don't think there are many pipe makers outside of Turkey carving meerschaum portraits.

You might be able to pick knife blanks up at Woodcraft. Pretty sure they have some of that stuff.

Lars Kiel Videos of Hans "Former" Nielson and Kurt Balleby
Likely many of you have seen these already, but I just stumbled into them this morning, and they are fantastic! Thought you might enjoy them if you haven't already.... Re: Lathe Chuck Advice.
That Atlas would be great if it is good condition! About a million times better than a wood lathe for pipe making. It also comes with enough tooling to get you started with the exception of a briar chuck, and that can be done on the cheep if you're motivated.... I'd highly recommend you look into th...

Re: Classic Pipe Shapes
The following shape chart is helpful in defining standard pipe shapes. Might be a helpful start, but does not talk about how to make them: http://pipedia.org/wiki/Pipe_Shapes Click on each shape for a larger illustration and general description of what defines the shape. The Pimo book is helpful--a ...

Re: New Pipe Maker wants critique
It's great to see the photos, thanks, Justin! They look nice! Great to hear your bore is 3/16" as opposed to 1/16". That should provide an excellent draw! Also good to hear the CA glue finish seems to be working out OK so far in terms of how they smoke. Sounds like you and your friends hav...

Re: #10 new finish. Tell me what you think
As George mentioned, this is great for your 10th pipe! Your new finish looks great to me! The only thing I notice in terms of finish likely has more to do with the lighting in the photos. Is there a difference in staining on the left side (bottom two photos) and the right? It appears the left side h...

Re: New Pipe Maker wants critique
Hello Justin, Wow, I did not read your outline completely, but as Sas mentions, you're making something very different than what most of us are aspiring to do. How do they smoke? Have you compared the experience of smoking them with traditional briar/vulcanite pipes, or the older style traditional c...

Re: New Orleans Pipe Show Report
My wife went with me, and we had a fantastic time in NOLA!! I agree with Bruce--the venue was fantastic, and Toby and crew did a great job organizing the show. The traffic was a bit under what I'd hoped for, but very respectable for a first show. Sales above $300 seemed pretty slow (I was skunked on...

You're getting good pointers on refinements, but this is remarkably nice for your 9th pipe! It seems perfectly worthy to sell to me too.

Is this an existing material you've discovered works well for stems, or one you have developed?
Keep us posted in terms of your plans for it... I'd be interested in trying some if and when it becomes available.

Re: Drilling Speeds
I agree with George, your 570 setting is going to be your best bet for all your drilling. My experience is that's actually a pretty good speed, and about where I end up on the lathe for stummel drilling. The only time I drill faster than that is in ebonite, and then I have to focus on a faster feed ...
