Re: Smoking?

McClelland's 5110 in a KY Briar bent egg. Sunday Baroque and an SO Dry Process Ethiopian espresso on the side, perfect pairing, especially with a hint of fall in the air. Contemplating the day's activities to include a bit of pipe making, a long walk, and watching Federer and Djokovic duke it out th...

Re: My Very Humble Workshed

Nice score on the blasting rig! I'd go ahead and move that entire set up to the basement before the winter sets in... My shop is our attached garage, and I work with the door into our kitchen open most of the time. The latikia is a bigger problem for my wife than the dust! For years all I had for du...

Re: Is there anyone out there?

Timely topic! I'm about to harvest my first tobacco crop! Unfortunately, that only consists of 3 Burly plants, and 3 Dark Kentucky plants, so I'm going to have to get some other base tobaccos to blend with them. I've got some straight latakia that will no doubt figure in. Haven't figured out exactly...

Yes, and they will actually be sharper and cut cleaner than when they were brand new!
Old files really do make great tools, too though. I made several knifes from old files that sharpen well, and stay sharp a long time.

Re: The current state of this forum

Amen, Tyler! There has been a lot less substance at all levels. I'm at least as guilty of anyone of not adding much in the way of useful content lately. It's worth making an effort to bring it back. This forum is still the best place for useful pipe making information at all levels of interest in th...

Re: Pressure Pot set up

I'm interested in this too. We used a preasure pot system for spraying lacquer in my piano rebuilding shop for a while, and worked much better than the syphon system we were using before it. Lots more control and consistency in the flow. I found this basic introduction to the two systems interesting...

....Lastly, get a copy of South Bend's "How to Run a Lathe". Old book but one of the best. Lots of good stuff in it. Here is a link to a PDF of this. I think I've seen better scans of it someplace too: http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/1617/3789.pdf It may also be available at your local l...

Walt, I love your post in this thread, and your passion for pipe making in general... So much of what you've stated rings true to me. I recently heard an interview by a renown medical researcher that stated that 100 years from now medicine will look as different from medicine now as when we compare ...

Re: Machined pipes.New Factory in Nashville.

Wow, great story about the Danes weathering the last big bust, Todd. That is so cool! Great pipe makers that love making pipes will hang in there when this currently inflated market in the US plays itself out. The fools that thought this was an easy way to make money will fall by the wayside. We sho...

so those who make turd pipes, are they now considered fartisans? That is brilliant, Steve :notworthy: Perfect! Now we can join this thread with the is this art vs. craft thread! So, if certain high grade pipes are art, would Briarworks's versions of those pipes then be akin to something like enhanc...

Re: Art or Craft?

This thread may have played out, but I want to take another stab it from my perspective... I greatly admire seeing fine woodworking, especially beautifully made furniture and cabinets where the aesthetics play just as important a role as the function, and sometimes supplant it. The examples I like t...

Re: Art or Craft?

I'm suggesting that maybe in the act of conception and creation, the artist is in fact leaving something purely spirit with his work. I think you're right on with this! One of my favorite quotes: A laborer uses his hands. A craftsman uses his hands and heart. An artist uses his hands, heart, and so...

Nice work, David! That's a beautiful version of a classic shape and I like your liberties with it a lot... Hopefully your client appreciates them too... I suspect they will love this pipe! And if for some reason they really wanted an exact replica they should have looked for another Dunhill rather t...

You grabbed an old thread here. This was before the Columbus show 2 years ago. But the show is still going, and better than ever, actually. In 2013 they moved to a new venue that seems to be working out really well. As of 2014 they have also added Friday night to the all day show on Saturday. And th...

Re: Replacing broken inegral tenon with delrin

Ronnie B of Night Owl Pipeworks showed me a really slick way of doing this, but I suspect it takes a bunch of practice to get the hang of it, and involves a little bit of risk if you screw it up. Fit the new delrin to the old mortise for a good sung fit Drill the remaining old tenon out of the the s...
