Re: Guess the maker

Thanks for the your idea on the tapered versus saddle stem idea, David. I may revisit that... I did one that way some generations back, but it's worth exploring further. No problem, Andrew! Yes, a bit awkward, but that's George's style, and it's almost endearing once you get know the fellow  I...

Re: Guess the maker

Thanks very much, folks! Also, I'll be the first to admit my stem work is a lacking in some areas, and this shape has offered some significant challenges. My good friends, Bruce and Bob are a spot on with that, and Andrew's reaction is warranted. I'm still dialing in the stem for this shape. For a w...

Re: Well, goodbye pre-ban ivory

I'm in support of the new legislation. I've used salvaged and other pre-ban ivory for a lot years, first in piano work, and then in pipe making. Turns out their is tons of counterfeit "pre-ban" smuggled into the US, and even more in China that is a large part of the incentive for poaching....

Re: Finally restoring my Craftsman 109

Looks like a fun project, Scottie! Should make a great little lathe for stem work.... Bet it's way better, and is certainly much cooler than the little 7x12 Chinese lathe I had in the beginning for stem work.

Re: Pipemakers, craftsmen? Artists? Engineers? Bodgers?

It all depends on what kind of pipes you make. To be an artist you first have to learn techniques and then impart creativity and originality in to what you make. Art or craft, both noble and worthy pursuits. It is just a matter of which you want to be. If the pipes you make are faithful versions of...

Re: Pipemakers, craftsmen? Artists? Engineers? Bodgers?

A laborer uses his hands. A craftsman uses his hands and heart. An artist uses his hands, heart, and soul. I love this quote, and it's certainly relevant here... If it were not so overused these days I think "artisan" would fit the bill, but it is overused, and as such has lost all of its...

Re: Brew day!

Timely thread--I'm planning to try my first home brew next week over Spring Break. Fun to see these set ups. I'm just starting to pull together an equipment list. My son gave me a bunch of stuff that will help. He was making hard cider with it. I just need to fill in the gaps.

Re: Which Compressor to Buy

For what it's worth, I bought this one from the local Tractor Supply when it was on sale of for just under 1K (it goes on sale pretty often), and it's been great: http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/ingersoll-randreg%3B-5hp-air-compressor-80-gal It's only a single stage, but is rated at 15.8 cfm a...

Fitting quotes?

These turned up in my FaceBook feed this evening, and while they were posted by a musician, I thought them fitting for pipe makers, and wannabe pipe makers, especially as a pair: People quit on jobs. They quit on marriages. They quit on school. There's an immediacy of this day and age that doesn't l...

Re: Getting a free metal lathe for a while

Adam Davidson used a version of the 7x12 for stem work until just a few months ago, and he does some of the most beautiful stem work I've ever seen. I started with a version of these as well. You'll be able to learn how to make stems, gain tons of experience, and even perfect your skills with one if...

Re: Ernie's Shrine of Pipe Excellence

Back to the thread title: I think Ernie has a crush on Jeff. I'll confess this, since it's purported to be good for the soul, and it won't go any further than you all, and the internet... I want to be Jeff when I grow up! Not so much for Ernie's affection, although Ernie is a great guy and all. Jef...

Re: Ernie's Shrine of Pipe Perfection

Aside from the long and painful derailment in the middle, this has been a great thread! Jeff makes an amazing Billiard, and I while I love everything about it, I especially love, and am humbled by, his saddle stem work. Just tried a few new things as a result on my top secret Christmas project. Suff...

Empty your dust collector!

This tip courtesy of Rad Davis, who mentioned he let his go too far... If you wait until you can see stuff in the little window there is no way you're going to be able to lift the bag to empty it! While pipe making we make mostly very fine sanding dust, which is really dense once it collects for a w...
